Rivers are more than just streams of water: they’re vital for our planet’s health, support diverse ecosystems and human life. Sadly, very few rivers are left in their natural, wild, meandering state. Most of them are now restricted by dams and infrastructure, driven by the demands of hydropower and irrigation. Additionally, pollution and overfishing are increasingly causing biodiversity loss and habitat destruction. Through #GenerationRestoration, we must commit to protecting and restoring these crucial ecosystems for the benefit of present and future generations.

🌍 Celebrating World Water Day 2025! 💧   On #WorldWaterDay, we would like to celebrate the Congo Peatlands and the work the International Climate Initiative (IKI) funded Congo Peatlands Project is doing to bring science based tools together with local knowledge to provide an evidence base to support the sustainable management of this precious resource. Covering an area of more than 167,600 km² in #DRC and #RoC, the Congo peatlands store approximately 29 billion tonnes of carbon, regulate the water cycle across the Congo Basin, and support agriculture, drinking water, and ecosystem health. These peatlands sustain the livelihoods of more than 5 million people in an incredibly diverse ecosystem, with over 1,000 🐦 species, 700 🐟 species, and 200 aquatic species. The connection between water and the health of the Congo peatlands—essential for providing key ecosystem services—was emphasized during the recent stakeholder consultation workshop in Brazzaville organized by UN Environment Programme and the Ministry of Environment, Sustainable Development and the Congo Basin of the #RoC, with support from UNEP-DHI. The workshop focused on gathering input from government officials, scientists, researchers and representatives from different national and international organizations to inform a water management tool (hydrological decision support system) being developed by the Congo Peatlands Project. 🐟🌍 To celebrate World Water Day, do you want to understand how water-related ecosystems have changed over time in your country? 🌿 Discover the Freshwater Ecosystems Explorer, a user-friendly platform offering high-resolution geospatial data on freshwater ecosystems. This tool helps decision-makers track changes and drive actions to protect and restore these vital resources, supporting progress towards SDG target 6.6 ‘protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes'. UN Environment Programme, as the custodian agency for SDG indicator 6.6.1 on the ‘change in the extent of water-related ecosystems over time’, and UNEP DHI Partnership - Centre on Water and Environment, have coordinated the development of this tool. Data can be visualized and downloaded at national, sub-national, and basin levels. Will you be attending Uganda's Water Week? 💧    The 8th Uganda Water and Environment Week, taking place both virtually and in person from March 17th to the 21st, 2025, will focus on the theme “Water and environment resources for enhanced resilience and improved incomes and livelihoods."    We are excited to announce that Joakim Harlin will represent the UN Environment Programme and the UNEP-DHI Centre at by delivering a keynote speech centered on Uganda’s progress in the three SDG 6 indicators under UNEP’s custodianship:    📌 SDG 6.3.2: Uganda has been actively working to improve ambient water quality across all its bodies of water. Despite the challenges, around 84% of water bodies in Uganda have a good level of water quality, enabling the country to reach a “very high” level of implementation on SDG 6.3.2. 👉 Learn more on the SDG Water Quality Hub: https://lnkd.in/e3x2egWc  📌 SDG 6.5.1: Uganda reported a “medium-high” level of implementation of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in 2023, with a score of 57.
