10 years ago, in late March, Ann Hiiemaa joined us as a junior consultant. We were near €0.5m revenue with 5 people. Today we are confidently atop of our market and our game, 6 times bigger and with more than 30 people onboard. Ann's share of this is significant, as she has been the only constant in my work life during this tumultuous period. She's great - and now for 2.5 years a partner leading the biggest team with a knack for sales and client relationship development - and working with her has helped me understand what I appreciate most about colleagues: 🫡 You really can outwork the competition. The world is full of people with great ideas but keep people who work more than others close to you. And ofcourse, they will work hard if they see that you as a leader work hard. I care much, much more about this in people, than "raw talent" or prior training. And I clearly distinguish between people based on how much they work, and based on experience, this is the right thing to do. Trust and reliability go hand in hand. 💬 If you want an atmosphere of transparency and honesty, you need people who are willing to engage you on equal terms and you need to be open to it. While I have been less then stellar in giving honest feedback, Ann has been key in making me understand the positives on being on the receiving end. Some of the best ideas I have had about managing this firm, about changing myself or what I expect from my people, have come from these discussions that she has initiated. 🦸♀️ Well before we had proper personal development action plans, I understood, while supporting Ann, that people develop around their strengths, and you need to identify those together and weave the yarn around that. We all have weakness and although they should not be prohibitive, then the growth and benefits are where the strengths lie. Find the opportunities, shift people around tasks if you both see that the payout is better in doing something else. Ann loves to sell and develop new business and spotting that early on, even as she was quite junior, was important 🦉 we have gone through many iterations of this company together and let's see how many more we can do. Re-inventing yourself, your company, in the face of competitive pressures, is what consistent strategy is about. Ann is a different person she was 10 years ago and so am I and so is our firm. And our field - communication and government relations - is where experience has a compounding effect - the growth of your networks and your trusting relationships, as the foundation for practicing your skills - brings ever-better results for our clients and ourselves. thank you Ann, I am very grateful for your partnership.
