Die Vertretung des Landes Baden-Württemberg beim Bund und die Vertretung des Landes Baden-Württemberg bei der EU richteten gemeinsam eine Veranstaltung über die Auswirkungen der #Bundestagswahl 🗳️ auf die Politikgestaltung in #Deutschland und #Europa aus. Our Deputy Director Thu Nguyen spoke at a public hearing of the BUDG and CONT committees in the European Commission on “Lessons learnt from the Rule of Law Conditionality Mechanism and ways to make it more effective for the future.” In her intervention, she addressed the implementation and effectiveness of different forms of rule of law conditionality in the EU: 1. The Rule of Law Conditionality Mechanism 2. The Recovery and Resilience Facility (#RRF, under #NextGenerationEU) 3. 📣 Many organizations leave EU funds untapped - but why is this and what can be done about it? My latest article, now published in the journal Regional and Federal Studies, examines why organizations do (not) apply for EU cohesion policy funds - and offers suggestions on how demand can be increased. 💡 👉 Better outreach: Umbrella and network organizations should play a more active role in spreading information about funding opportunities. 👉 Reducing bureaucracy: Administrative burdens remain too high for many applicants – joint efforts by EU legislators and administrations are needed to find practicable solutions. 👉 More inclusivity: Smaller and less experienced organizations should be better considered in project selection criteria. What is the EU, and who is it for? According to Ana Bobić, Senior Researcher Jacques Delors Centre , as the EU hardens its stance on migration, we must confront deeper questions about solidarity and belonging. She defines transnational solidarity as a connection that transcends borders, one in which both EU and non-EU citizens can engage in meaningful mutual recognition. Often, she notes, EU law prioritises market freedoms over human rights – limiting true solidarity. "If there is someone in my society who isn't free, then my own freedom is also incomplete." Bobić critiques the EU's new Migration and Asylum Pact for echoing national political pressures, making asylum harder and deportations easier. What might be an example of inclusive solidarity? Bobić says the welcoming response to Ukrainians showed the EU's capacity for swift, inclusive action - with a caveat. "We acted fast because we saw Ukrainians as similar to us. Syrians don't receive the same solidarity." As a Croatian in Germany who studied in the UK, she values mobility – but warns that solidarity shouldn't depend on cultural closeness or economic status. "It's time the EU asks: Who is it really for?"
