In today's world, the blue economy is more essential than ever. This week, the #OneOceanSummit is bringing together experts and decision-makers in Bergen, Norway, to address some of the most pressing ocean challenges facing the global community—setting the stage for the upcoming UN Ocean Conference in Nice this June. Our Head of Ocean at the World Economic Forum and Friends of Ocean Action, Alfredo Giron Nava, is on the ground, highlighting the role of the blue economy in today's landscape and discussing how addressing ocean issues proves that multilateralism still matters. 🌊 The ocean sustains the global economy. The global ocean economy doubled in real terms within 25 years. By 2030, the annual economic value of ocean-based industries could reach $3 trillion. As we face mounting challenges—overfishing, pollution, extreme storms, and rising temperatures—global cooperation to protect and restore the ocean can deliver powerful benefits for people, the planet, and economic prosperity. As we approach the Blue Economy and Finance Forum (BEFF) in June 2025, it is important to talk about concrete actions that can be taken to further unlock finance for ocean action at scale. In order to achieve this, we need the right financial tools and partnerships in place, so that we can unlock solutions that benefit people, planet, and economies alike. Greatly honoured to speak at the official opening of the One Ocean Summit in Bergen today. Once more Bergen has demonstrated the sincerity of it inseparable relationship with the ocean. Speaking on the subject of the ocean warming and sea level rise, my remarks included the following,“There are many reasons for the demise of coral; but let’s not beat around the bush. Coral is bleaching and dying primarily because the ocean is warming at an alarming rate; and the ocean is warming primarily because our thin planetary atmosphere is being blanketed by the accumulating greenhouse gases emitted by humankind’s ongoing burning of fossil fuels. She has done wonders around the world bringing ocean awareness and ocean literacy to young people wherever she goes. This week in Paris, France - marking seventy days before the UN Ocean Conference (#UNOC) opens - ocean leaders from around the world came together for the “SOS Ocean” Summit. Leaders and key stakeholders are, through the #SOSOcean Manifesto, urged to “demonstrate a renewed unity”, and “lead by example and make the most ambitious, protective, and regenerative decisions in Nice for marine life and ecosystems.” 💙 One of the five manifesto commitments includes a call to action on the regenerative #blueeconomy: “To Make the Ocean a Model of Coordinated, Regulated, and Sustainable Economy; to Encourage Innovation and Financial Investment in a Regenerative Blue Economy”, which can be achieved through: 🔹 Collaborative Governance: Uniting political leaders, entrepreneurs, public institutions, and local actors to ensure fair, inclusive, and sustainable management of the Ocean, while prioritizing the livelihoods of coastal and island communities. 🔹 Protecting Marine Ecosystems: Combating illegal and destructive fishing practices, supporting sustainable fishing, and restoring fish stocks to prevent further depletion of the Ocean’s biodiversity. 🔹 Investing in Innovation & Action: Mobilizing financial actors to support projects in ecosystem protection, sustainable technologies, and new decarbonized solutions, alongside commitments from global companies to tackle plastic pollution and promote biodiversity restoration. New Report: The Ocean Economy to 2050 🌊 This morning, the OECD - OCDE released its latest report on the ocean economy, highlighting potential pathways for the sector’s development through 2050, emphasising the urgent need for science-based decision-making and improved ocean governance. Some key takeaways:  🔹 The global ocean economy doubled in real terms in 25 years 🔹 Over 75% of ocean economic growth between 1995 and 2020 originated in countries in Asia and the Pacific. Eastern Asia alone accounted for 56% of global ocean economy expansion. 🔹 Digitalization & innovation are crucial for a productive and sustainable blue economy. 🔹Governance & sustainability must align to phase out harmful practices and drive ocean-positive growth.
