Crepes vs. Pancakes: The carbon removal vs. DAC analogy you didn't know you needed For years, Climeworks has been celebrated as a Direct Air Capture (DAC) pioneer. Today, we're a high-quality carbon removal leader. Same mission, broader horizon. Wondering why this evolution matters? Let's explore it through something we all understand—breakfast. The pancake (a.k.a. DAC): pancakes are thicker and occupy a limited space but deliver impressive taste and pleasure. A single pancake is satisfying, but for maximum impact, you stack them strategically, creating a powerful, concentrated solution. They're specialized, efficient, and designed for scaling. The crepe (a.k.a. Carbon Removal): crepes offer versatility and reach. They're adaptable, cover more surface area. You might enjoy one with a simple topping or create a diverse portfolio of flavors and fillings to address various needs. When layered together, as in a mille-crepes cake, they transform into something different again—distinct elements working in harmony toward a common goal. We need all removal solutions: Some challenges require the focused intensity of a pancake stack. Others benefit from the versatile, wide-reaching approach of crepes. And the ingredients to cook each are very similar. As a carbon removal provider with deep DAC expertise, we recognize that the path to carbon removals at scale is not about choosing between technologies—it's about orchestrating the right combination at the right time. A sound approach, like a well-balanced breakfast, needs both depth and breadth. We need the concentrated power of technology-based solutions like DAC alongside other technology-based and nature-based carbon removal approaches —from biochar to enhanced weathering, BECCS and reforestation —each with unique strengths and applications. Because when it comes to removing gigatons of carbon dioxide from the air, the question isn't pancakes or crepes. It's how we develop the right mix to achieve the most effective solution. Now, who's ready to eat, and drive the change we need? Join the Climeworks Pioneers removing CO2 from the air with us. https://lnkd.in/eCR--KcM #Pioneers #Carbonremoval #Directaircapture #Analogy #ClimateAction

Carbon removal investments are a strategic move to lead in the rising trillion-dollar carbon market. Last week at the SMI Terra Carta Roundtables, our CEO Christoph Gebald joined global leaders to discuss the economic case for the net-zero transition, highlighting why the business case for carbon removal is stronger than ever: ☑️ Beyond compliance: Carbon removal helps companies unlock new revenue streams, enhance resilience, and stay ahead in a shifting regulatory and market landscape. ☑️ A portfolio approach is essential: No single solution fits all. A high-quality, diversified mix of nature-based and engineered removals ensures impact, scalability, and credibility. ☑️ Quality is non-negotiable: Transparency, third-party certification, and full lifecycle assessments are critical to guarantee carbon removal solutions have a real impact. ☑️ Long-term commitments drive success: One-off purchases won’t cut it. Strategic offtake agreements will define the industry's future and enable the needed scale-up. A huge thank you to the Sustainable Markets Initiative team and His Majesty King Charles III for their continued leadership and commitment to advancing carbon removal and sustainability. Special thanks to Jennifer Jordan-Saifi, M.V.O., MBA , Ortega Pittman, and Tanya Ristoff, M.A. for their dedication and impactful work in driving this agenda forward. Companies that invest in carbon removal today will shape tomorrow’s economy. Now is the time to lead. #SMI #CarbonRemoval #Climeworks

The carbon removal market is scaling fast, and we’re proud to be driving that momentum with our suppliers and partners. It took nearly 5 years to reach 500,000 CORCs, but we doubled that in just one year—and we’re on track to hit the next million before mid-2026. 🌍💚 Key highlights: - 576,561 metric tonnes of CO₂ already retired and claimed for - Leading methodologies: Geologically Stored Carbon & Biochar - Top markets: 🇺🇸U.S. (45%), 🇫🇮Finland, 🇧🇴Bolivia, 🇧🇷Brazil Reaching one million of CO₂ removals is just the beginning—our goal is to continue to use our expertise and track record to deliver proven, scalable and high-quality carbon removal credits. The next million is already within reach, and we will continue to ensure that businesses worldwide have access to trusted, verifiable carbon removal credits, at scale. Did you know that March 21st is the United Nation's World Day for Glaciers? When our co-founders Christoph and Jan stood on Swiss mountaintops in the mid-2000s, they weren't just passionate skiers enjoying the view. As engineers and outdoor enthusiasts, they witnessed something deeply troubling: the glaciers they loved were retreating before their eyes. "We realized that excess CO2 was literally reshaping the landscapes we cherish." recalls Christoph. "As engineers, we asked ourselves: could we build a solution to address the very thing causing this retreat?" That question sparked what would become Climeworks, where even our headquarters' meeting rooms bear the names of Swiss glaciers as constant reminders of our mission. #Switzerland offers a front-row seat to the tangible impacts of excess carbon dioxide. The #Aletsch Glacier—the Alps' largest—has retreated over 3km since 1870 and lost more than 1.3km of ice thickness. This isn't just about scenic beauty—these "water towers" supply freshwater to millions across Europe. The United Nations recognizes this urgency, declaring 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers and establishing the first World Day for Glaciers. This global milestone highlights what our founders saw firsthand: glaciers are essential freshwater reservoirs and indicators of our planet's health—we need them and they need our protection now. While reducing emissions remains essential, we must also actively remove carbon already in our atmosphere. High-quality carbon removal solutions—spanning from biochar and enhanced rock weathering to direct air capture—represent a crucial part of our action toolkit. This isn't just about technology and the love of nature; it's about responsibility and a prosperous economy. Every ton of CO₂ we remove helps preserve the natural wonders that inspired our journey, secures freshwater resources for future generations, and fosters a resilient economy today. Join the #Climeworks #Pioneers and take meaningful action. https://lnkd.in/eCR--KcM #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #Glaciers #InternationalYearOfGlaciers #WorldDayforGlaciers

A turning point for carbon removal The Science Based Targets initiative, the world's leading body for climate target setting, published the draft guidance of its revised Corporate Net Zero Standard yesterday, with major implications for companies. For the first time, SBTi is establishing guidelines on how companies can begin removing CO₂ in the near term. What do companies need to know about this update? ☑️ Timing: Under the proposed interim removal targets, the first milestone is 2030 ☑️ Durability: SBTi classified removals with 1000+ years of storage as permanent removals ☑️ Costs: A gradual ramp-up of carbon removal makes sense for buyers ☑️ Science: The revision of the Corporate Net Zero Standard reflects latest climate science ☑️ Taking action: You can start building an SBTi-aligned carbon removal portfolio with Climeworks right away Learn more about the SBTi's new carbon removal guidelines in our blog: https://lnkd.in/esrsSxN4 #CarbonRemoval #SBTi #Climeworks
