Today, SickKids marked the magical milestone of 150 years strong – and by all accounts it was the best birthday ever. 🥳 Back in 1875, our founders, led by Elizabeth McMaster, opened the doors to a hospital “for the admission and treatment of all sick children, regardless of ability to pay.” A century and a half later, we opened our hearts to celebrate our tradition of excellence and longstanding leadership in clinical care, research and learning – past, present and future. Beyond the cupcakes, trivia contests, photobooths, and special guestbook signings, at the centre of the celebration was the people who brought SickKids birthday to life: children in SickKids’ care, their loving families, the front-line, corporate services and support staff who keep operations going 24/7, the researchers on the cusp of groundbreaking discoveries, the learners who are the next generation of health-care practitioners, the donors and volunteers who give to ensure this cherished legacy continues. Happy birthday to us…and many more! Read our recap and browse more photos from this momentous day ➡️ https://bit.ly/4iXeAVn #SickKids150

New #SKResearch highlights the clinical utility of whole genome sequencing for #autism spectrum disorder (ASD), providing a genetic diagnosis to almost 50 per cent of the families involved in the study and informing counselling support for families. Led by SickKids' Chief of Research Dr. Stephen Scherer and published in the Journal of Medical Genetics, this groundbreaking study is one of the first to showcase how whole genome sequencing results can be used to inform care for ASD. This includes helping with medical management and guiding families toward relevant community support groups. Read the full study ➡️ https://lnkd.in/gdPQbCRD

Being diagnosed with cancer as a teen or young adult can be isolating — that's why it's so important to connect with others, says Krystil, a 16-year-old SickKids patient with acute myeloid leukemia. For Krystil, she took advantage of the opportunities to connect with others, like: ✅ SickKids prom ✅ Campfire Circle events ✅ SickKids Teen Cancer Connection program, which connects teen patients with each other and offers other personalized support Thank you, Krystil, for sharing your experience this Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week. #AYAAwarenessWeek #AYACancer

Meet Matthew Singh, one of more than 80 Pharmacy Technicians who make sure medications are well-stocked across SickKids and always ready for when a patient needs it. Matthew reviews how various medications are used and determines where and how they need to be stored across the hospital. For example, a patient undergoing chemotherapy may use more of a certain anti-nausea medication, so Matthew would ensure it's stocked in a medication dispensing cabinet on a cancer unit, but maybe not in other areas of the hospital. By reviewing data of how drugs get used on a daily basis, Matthew determines how much of each medication needs to be stocked on each unit. Pharmacy Technicians like Matthew work seven days a week to deliver medications across the hospital. Thank you, Matthew and all Pharmacy staff for ensuring patients are well-taken care of and have access to medication while in hospital. #PharmacyMonth
