We are celebrating Sikh Heritage Month at the City of Peterborough. "On behalf of the City of Peterborough, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to our Sikh friends and neighbors for their contributions to our community and our country" said Mayor Jeff Leal. "This April, let us all take this opportunity to learn, reflect, and celebrate the incredible impact of Sikh heritage on our shared history. "The Sikh community has long been a pillar of strength and generosity, embodying the values of seva (selfless service), equality, and justice. In Peterborough we are fortunate to have a thriving Sikh community that enriches our city through its cultural traditions, volunteerism, and commitment to building a more inclusive society. Sikh values reflect the best of what it means to be Canadian." https://lnkd.in/gaNQDhBq

Today, we remember the bravery and sacrifices of the Canadian soldiers who served our country in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. We honour all those who answered the call to defend our freedom and democracy. Lest we forget.
During the attack on Vimy Ridge, Canadian units fought as a unified force with all four divisions of the Canadian Corps participating in the opening assault of the larger Battle of Arras. 🇨🇦 On this day in 1917, two and a half years into the First World War, Canada was tasked with capturing Vimy Ridge in northern France. Captured by opposing forces early in the war, the area was used as a strong defensive position due to its advantageous height overlooking the strategic resources and railways of the Douai plain. With intricate tunnels, heavy artillery, and trained soldiers, the Allies had attempted to capture Vimy Ridge several times in 1914 and 1915. Therefore, additional preparation was key. Canadians spent the winter training using trench system models and gathering enemy intelligence. In addition, the Allies conducted a “mining” operation, digging tunnels under key positions and setting up strategic explosives to detonate during the attack. The Canadians needed the element of surprise in their attack. They fired over a million shells in the span of a 13 days to conceal the timing of their assault. This became known as the “Week of Suffering.” Following this barrage, the battle began at 5:30 a.m. on April 9, 1917. The first wave of soldiers, made up of 15,000 to 20,000 Canadians, faced deadly machine gun fire and a fierce defence. The “creeping barrage,” a tactic in which soldiers advance behind heavy Allied artillery fire, was instrumental in capturing strategic positions. The Canadians moved forward 90 metres every three minutes, capturing most of their initial objectives on time. The Canadians, however, did not succeed in capturing all their objectives and consolidating the position until April 12. The price was high; over 10,600 causalities, including some 3,600 fatalities. Today, the Canadian National Vimy Memorial site in France stands as a monument to the sacrifice of Canadians in France during the First World War. The monument itself lists the names of 11,285 Canadian soldiers who remain “missing, presumed dead,” paying tribute to their ultimate sacrifice where no gravestone can. Lest we forget. #CanadaRemembers 📷 Photos: Library and Archives Canada | Bibliothèque et Archives Canada

Congratulations to Peterborough Police Service on 175 years of service in our community. The Service was officially formed in 1850 as one of the first acts of Peterborough Council, and has since grown to 162 officers and 96 civilian members. "It is important for us to say thank you to the officers and civilians that built this Organization and have served with dedication as our community has grown. When looking back through our history, it is not surprising to see the Peterborough Police Service at the forefront of policing and public safety innovation. We pledge that the Service of the future is just as forward thinking and responsive to the needs of our policing communities," said Chief Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police Service. #CommunitySafety #PoliceService #175Anniversary #CommunityWellbeing #TeamPtbo
This year marks the 175th anniversary of the Peterborough Police Service. The Service was officially formed as one of the first acts of Peterborough council in 1850 with William Cummings serving as Chief Constable alongside four part-time constables serving a population of around 2,200. Since that time, the Service has grown to 162 officers and 96 civilian members serving the residents of the City of Peterborough, Village of Lakefield and Township of Cavan-Monaghan, with a combined population of approximately 100,000 people, and welcomes in just over 3 million visitors, students and residents from neighbouring communities, annually. The mission of our Service is to promote the safety of citizens and the protection of property, through an appropriate balance of law enforcement and problem solving and crime-prevention initiatives. Collaborating and engaging with our community remains at the very core of what we do each and every day as policing is not done in isolation. As Sir Robert Peel stated in 1829, “The police are the public and the public are the police.” We rely heavily on this interdependent relationship and your ongoing support with respect to sharing information, participating in crime prevention initiatives and reporting crime. “We are honoured to be stewarding the celebration of this milestone. It is important for us to say thank you to the officers and civilians that built this Organization and have served with dedication as our community has grown. When looking back through our history, it is not surprising to see the Peterborough Police Service at the forefront of policing and public safety innovation. And we pledge that the Service of the future is just as forward thinking and responsive to the needs of our policing communities. As part of that pledge, we will revisit the mission, vision and values of our Service to ensure they reflect not only today’s expectations, but also the future needs of our Organization and the Community.” - Chief Stuart Betts, Peterborough Police Service. Historical Markers: · The Peterborough Police Service is the 10th oldest service in the province · 14 police chiefs in service history - Peterborough Police Chief George H. Johnston was originally thought to have been the first Chief of the Peterborough Police Service; however, historical archives suggest that there were three others who preceded him. · First civilian member was a female stenographer in 1952 · First female officer 1968 · First forensic unit created in 1948 · First K9 Unit 1997 · 500 Water Street officially opened in 1968 and was the only police-designated building until the City of Peterborough purchase of the 1421 Lansdowne Street location in February 2024 · 2025 is also the 25th Anniversary of the Peterborough Police Service Auxiliary Unit The public is invited to join us on Saturday, May 31st between 10:00am – 1:00pm at 1421 Lansdowne Street for a community celebration of the 175th anniversary milestone.
