🤝 Tractebel celebrates one year of innovation and collaboration with THORIZON, a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology developer! ⚛️ February 2025 marked the first anniversary of Tractebel's strategic partnership with Thorizon for the development of the Thorizon One molten salt reactor that will contribute to shaping a carbon-neutral future. Tractebel supports Thorizon in its journey as an SMR developer to start building a first-of-a-kind reactor by 2030.     💡 Over the past year, Tractebel has provided engineering services in the fields of neutronics, civil and layout design, radiation protection, waste management and decommissioning. Our experts have also worked on the conventional island and supported our partner for SMR developers’ critical missions, such as cost estimations and technical due diligence. Thorizon and Tractebel teams are working closely together to finalise the Initial Safety Analysis Report, which will be subject to a joint regulatory review. The Thorizon One SMR will use radioactive waste (spent fuel) from existing nuclear power plants to produce carbon-free energy. The reactor's unique cartridge design enhances safety, reduces time to market, and lowers costs, enhancing nuclear power's sustainability and efficiency. ♻️ By leveraging its expertise as the Belgian nuclear fleet's Responsible Designer and SMR frontrunner, Tractebel helps Generation IV advanced modular reactor developers such as Thorizon close the fuel cycle and make the circular economy a reality in the nuclear sector. 🏅 The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Management, Supply Chain and Quality Network of Excellence recognises Tractebel's "Quality Passport" tool!   👮♀ The "Quality Passport" initiative is designed to help bring newcomers into the nuclear supply chain. It is now available on the IAEA – Nuclear Harmonization and Standardization Initiative webpage, which demonstrates the tool's usefulness and validity.   ⚛ The initiative helps SMEs qualify to become nuclear suppliers. The nuclear industry would benefit from expanding its supplier base. However, obtaining a compliant Quality Management System certification for the nuclear industry can be cumbersome and expensive. ⚛️ Engineering long-term high-level radioactive waste management solutions! 👨💼Since 2013, Tractebel has been one of the Architect Engineers for the Andra Cigéo high-level radioactive waste deep geological repository project in Bure, France  🔬 Recently, our team based in France and Belgium visited the Cigéo test laboratory to witness first-hand the project's progress and better meet our client's needs and requirements. They explored the underground tunnels at a 500-metre depth, observed ongoing experiments, tests, and works. 🤝 The visit provided our colleagues new to the project with a better understanding of the issues and technical challenges involved. 💡 Supporting the PALLAS-reactor research project in The Netherlands! 🤝 Since 2015, Tractebel has worked in integrated teams with PALLAS Programme as the project's Owner's Engineer. Our role includes site characterisation, design authority and intelligent customer services, owner organisation’s development support, nuclear safety and licensing, and construction management. 🏗️ Tractebel also supports the PALLAS project as the Independent Third-Party Reviewer of the Nuclear Island Civil Structures. A team of civil engineering experts has reviewed the nuclear island civil design to provide feedback on the structural integrity. The results will be used to issue a no-objection declaration for further review and approval by the ANVS and the Municipality of Schagen (Gemeente Schagen) before the construction starts. In the framework of finalising the last review package (related to the pit and foundation), our colleagues visited the PALLAS construction site. They were impressed by the scale of the construction pit. This marks a significant milestone in our ongoing support for the project. 🏥 PALLAS-reactor is a nuclear multi-purpose research reactor designed to produce medical radioisotopes and provide irradiation services.
