PSA had the privilege of welcoming Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and distinguished guests at our PSA Antwerp’s Europa terminal this week. The President and his delegation were hosted by Group CEO Kim Pong ONG as well as Regional CEO for PSA EuroMed and PSA MESA Vincent Ng and PSA Belgium Managing Director Edward Tah . The visit showcased PSA’s operations and our vital role in Antwerp’s port ecosystem. A key highlight was Project Emerald — a phased transformative redevelopment of the Europa Terminal, undertaken in partnership with the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The first phase of the development is scheduled to complete by 2026 and upon the full completion of the entire project, the terminal capacity will increase to 2.5 million. As Kim Pong shared, PSA is committed to building the future of port operations through innovation, collaboration and our Node to Network strategy, ensuring that we continue to sustainably deliver world-class capabilities in one of Europe’s key maritime hubs. President Tharman was accompanied by Mrs Jane Ittogi Shanmugaratnam, and a delegation of Singapore government officials including Minister for Transport and Second Minister for Finance Chee Hong Tat, Minister of State, Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Social and Family Development Sun Xueling, as well as the governor of Antwerp province, Ms Cathy Berx, the mayor of Antwerp city, Ms Els van Doesburg and Antwerp Port Alderman Mr Johan Klaps. The strong and diverse ties between Belgium and Singapore was referenced during President Tharman’s visit, including strong trade links. PSA Antwerp is the Group’s second flagship terminal besides Singapore. PSA Antwerp and contractor TM Stadsbader Group DSG - Jeco Energies have officially signed a contract for the construction of a cutting-edge shore power installation at Europa Terminal! ⚡️🚀 A bold step towards a green future as we will enable up to 100 container ships each year to "plug in" to green electricity while docked! 😮 The installation will allow significantly reducing emissions and advancing our commitment to a cleaner, more sustainable port environment. 🔌💚 💡 Some key highlights: ✅ The 7.5 MW shore power installation will allow us to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 10,309 tons annually — the equivalent of 625 European households! ✅ Vessels can switch from diesel engines to clean, renewable electricity directly from the high-voltage grid, cutting harmful emissions like nitrogen and particulate matter. ✅ A €10 million investment, including €4 million in subsidies from the European Union’s REPowerEU initiative, will fund the project, set for completion by April 2026. “With the planned shore power installation for Europa Terminal, PSA Antwerp will become the first container terminal in the Port of Antwerp to offer this revolutionary service. This once again underlines, our unwavering commitment to prioritizing sustainability in our operations.” says Jurgen De Wachter, General Manager at PSA Antwerp container business. 💬 The shore power installation is part of Project Emerald, a collaborative effort between PSA Belgium and Port of Antwerp-Bruges, focused on the large-scale renovation of the Europa Terminal.
