MPE is delighted to be in Strasbourg to discuss competitiveness and the circular economy! Partnering with The Kangaroo Group aisbl, we hosted a lunch at the European Parliament to explore the metal packaging industry's challenges and opportunities under the new Clean Industrial Deal and Steel and Metals Action Plan. MEP Radan Kanev highlighted the critical challenges of high energy prices and scrap leakage. Paulina Dejmek Hack, Head of Cabinet for Commissioner Jessika Roswall, emphasised the EU's commitment to competitiveness, circularity, and innovation for a clean industrial transition. MPE President Paulo Sousa called for future European Commission initiatives to address energy costs, support decarbonisation, and implement resilient trade policies to boost the competitiveness of Europe's steel and aluminium value chains, including metal packaging. MPE acknowledges the potential of the European Commission's Steel and Metals Action Plan to support metal industries. However, MPE is disappointed that the plan does not fully recognise the needs of downstream users or support the competitiveness of the entire value chain. Metal packaging is one of the most visible metal products, engaging European consumers in recycling and providing high-quality scrap as secondary raw materials. Preventing scrap leakage outside the EU is crucial, as it would hinder the decarbonisation efforts of the aluminium and steel industries. One year after the launch of the #AntwerpDeclaration, 400 business leaders, industry and worker representatives from across Europe met in Antwerp to discuss the just-published #CleanIndustrialDeal with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The message is clear: #DelivertheDeal. To restore Europe’s prosperity, we need urgent action to: ✅ Restore the business case for investments in Europe ✅ Implement the EU Green Deal ✅ Safeguard high-quality jobs New EU policies must be assessed against a simple test: 🔹 Do they attract investment to Europe? 🔹 Do they keep Europe safe & independent? 🔹 Do they lower energy costs? 🔹 Do they create markets for sustainable products? 🔹 Do they secure quality jobs?
