  • MEMBER NEWS | UP Catalyst Secures €18M EIB Financing & It Is Recognised as Strategic Project Under EU Critical Raw Materials Act Our member UP Catalyst has received €18 million in venture debt financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to scale its carbon capture and utilisation technology (#CCU). The company converts industrial CO₂ into graphite and carbon nanotubes for applications in batteries, coatings, polymers, and other industrial applications. The funding, backed by the #InvestEU programme, will support UP Catalyst’s commercial scale-up, with production expected to reach 1,350 tonnes of battery-grade graphite and 270 tonnes of carbon nanotubes per year by 2027. UP Catalyst’s materials already meet the quality standards of fossil-based alternatives and are used in battery and construction sectors. The technology also significantly reduces energy use compared to conventional processes. Read more about the EIB financing at: https://bit.ly/3EpJy9y. The financing follows UP Catalyst’s recognition in March 2025 as a Strategic Project under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (#CRMA), one of 47 selected across Europe, and the only one from Estonia. The project focuses on producing cost-competitive, high-purity, and climate-neutral battery-grade graphite directly from CO₂ emissions, supporting the EU’s efforts to strengthen domestic supply chains for critical materials.
