Renewable Energy Semiconductor Manufacturing

Converting CO2 emissions from bio-based industries into sustainable chemicals

About us

CO2SMOS is a Horizon2020 project funded by the EU to help bio-based industries develop circular approaches and reduce their carbon footprint. In order to achieve this goal, CO2SMOS will develop solutions to transform the carbon emissions generated from bioprocesses into different sustainable bioproducts like durable polymers, renewable biochemicals and biodegradable materials. With these compounds, it is possible to produce greener end-products such as packaging, coatings, textiles and materials for biomedical applications. The demonstration of the technical, economic and environmental sustainability of the different CO2SMOS technologies will allow the design of an integrated platform of CO2 conversion processes for bio-based industries. This will help them achieve zero or even negative carbon emissions as well as replace fossil-based chemicals with more sustainable ones using renewable sources (green H2 and biomass) and CO2 as main raw materials.

🇪🇺 The CO2SMOS project on #bio and #echemicals 🧪 organised its final conference in Brussels last week. I was happy to present members and attendees with the results of our 4 years of policy work in CO2SMOS and its sister VIVALDI H2020 project, and update the project's recommendations in light of the new #CleanIndustrialDeal The upcoming Clean Industrial State Aid Framework (#CISAF), Industrial Decarbonisation Accelerator Act (#IDAA), Chemicals Industry Package and Circular Economy Act are key to ensuring the uptake of #CCU and sustainable chemicals. They must be vessels to: 🔵 Reward carbon reuse (carbon accounting reform to prioritise sustainable carbon vs fossil carbon) 🔵 Develop certification schemes (EU-wide certification system for biogenic carbon) 🔵 Set binding renewable carbon targets (mandates for non-fossil carbon incorporation ie. in plastics, textiles, etc.) 🔵 Simplify regulatory approvals for innovative projects (streamline state aid and regulatory approvals to accelerate commercialisation) 🔵 Create demand for sustainable chemicals (specific targets for alternative carbon feedstocks as with the RED) I also co-moderated a panel with Dimitrios Kourkoumpas "Linking biogenic CO2 providers and bioplastic manufacturers" where Mariana Araújo, Samuele Ambrosetti, Pablo Molina Rosillo and Fabio Poretti shared insights from the whole value chain and highlighted the need for funding, clear policy support and the creation of a level playing field for alternative chemicals compared to traditional virgin fossil oil-made chemicals. Thank you Nicolás, Lara and Carmen for a great event! I had really interesting conversations with consortium members, attendees and speakers alike.
