🔍Cefic Statement on Latest REACH Discussions at CARACAL On 3 April, the European Commission services presented their latest thinking on the revision of the REACH Regulation during a meeting of #CARACAL – the expert group of Competent Authorities for #REACH and #CLP, which advises the Commission on chemical legislation.   ⚠️From what we have heard at CARACAL, it seems that the Commission services are living in a different world than their own political leadership and President.   📑The REACH proposals made will massively increase the administrative burden for industry and #SMEs in particular. Calling the proposals "simplification" is absurd. Most of what was presented is identical to proposals made three years ago.   It’s as if there is no #CompetitivenessCompass, no #CleanIndustrialDeal, no economic crisis whatsoever. As if the High-Level Dialogue with Commissioner Jessika Roswall and EVP Stéphane Séjourné didn’t even take place.   We are truly shocked. #ChemicalIndustry #EUPolicy #REACHRevision #IndustrialCompetitiveness #SingleMarket #BetterRegulation #EUIndustry

📢 Cefic, alongside 17 business associations, calls on the European Parliament to vote today in favour of longer transition periods under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (#CSRD) and the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (#CS3D) - as outlined in the Stop-the-Clock proposal within the European Commission’s Omnibus package.   While we support the objectives of the CSRD and CS3D, extending the transition period, as proposed in the Omnibus package, would: ✅ Provide businesses with certainty to plan their compliance strategies and time to implement comprehensive changes. ✅ Enable stakeholder consultations and holistic discussions. ✅ Ensure the development of clear, practical guidance — thus ensuring that the final directives are robust, future-proof and supportive of sustainable business practices and economic growth.   📄 See our joint statement 👇   #Sustainability #CorporateReporting #EURegulations #BusinessGrowth #BusinessGrowth #StopTheClock

Biomass-derived chemicals are vital for a competitive, sustainable, and resilient Europe🌿. In a recent letter to the European Commission, Cefic and its Sector Groups active in the bioeconomy urge the EU to elevate the #Bioeconomy Strategy into a fully-fledged industrial strategy.📨 To truly scale-up the manufacturing of biomass-derived products and chemicals, we must first establish a favourable policy environment. ✅ One that enables a single market for sustainable products. ➡️ This will not only drive new investment and #innovation but also help retain existing business across the continent. 📈 In the letter, Cefic and Sector Groups APAG - Oleochemicals Europe, BioChem Europe, EFCG - European Fine Chemicals Group and European Fermentation Group, outline several strategic priorities. Cefic’s Director General Marco Mensink was honoured to join the “Water and the Competitiveness of European Industry” roundtable with Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall. 💧 Water is essential for our chemical industry’s operations. Yet climate change is affecting its availability and therefore our resilience. During this meeting, which will feed into the new EU Water Resilience Strategy, Marco shared the following messages: 🔹Water is a key resource for our industry’s resilience, essential for heating and cooling and our logistics operations. Without it, we lose resilience.  🔹Advancing solutions to improve water treatment and purification technologies means working together – collaboration is essential at all levels; between the water industry, the upstream value chain like the chemical sector, local governments and at EU level. 🔹 Flexibility needed at member state level - local authorities and stakeholders best understand the specific water basin specific conditions in their countries and regions. 🔹 A technology-neutral innovation approach that fully considers the energy-water nexus, is a key success factor in delivering efficient and sustainable solutions. Thank you to Commissioner Roswall for leading this dialogue! 🤝 💡 Want to understand how the industry is implementing water management and efficiency solutions? Through strong partnerships like the one with Cefic, the IRISS – International SSbD network is helping to translate Safe and Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) principles into real-world impact. The IRISS Community Platform plays a central role by bringing together experts, facilitating collaboration through working groups, and sharing practical guidance and insights across industries. 🤝💡 At the recent IRISS Stakeholder Event in Brussels, "Accelerating the Transition with SSbD Materials, Processes, and Products," key project findings were highlighted, critical gaps identified, and actionable recommendations for advancing SSbD implementation were presented. 🌍 💬 One clear message from the discussions: For SSbD to be a truly reliable and usable compass for innovation, it is essential that all stakeholders work together in a harmonised way like defining simplified guidelines and tools for early stage of R&D. 🌱 🔍 Top takeaways from the industry panel include: ✅ While safety and sustainability are already integrated in the innovation process in the industry, awareness and understanding of SSbD remain limited. Education and training are essential to empower implementation. ✅ A pragmatic approach toward the implementation of the SSbD is needed for the industry in particular for SMEs. The framework should provide guiding principles. ✅ Tools and guidelines should be grounded in real-life applications to be practical and scalable. ✅ True progress depends on strong, value-chain and cross sector cooperation, from science to industry to policy makers. ✅ SSbD must help businesses strike the right balance between performance and sustainability of chemicals, materials, components and systems at the forefront. ✅ Clear business benefits can be key to drive adoption and long-term commitment. As we approach the projects' conclusion in May 2025, the participants emphasised the importance of continuing the momentum. The SSbD community platform will keep pushing forward, building on the foundation that IRISS has set. 👉 Join the IRISS community platform here: https://lnkd.in/dvM8hejw Thanks to the presenters of the panel: Sophie Wilmet (Moderator) Eva-Kathrin Schillinger Ann Dierckx Catherine Colin thierry delplanche Wolfgang Zitz And thank you, Emma Strömberg, for hosting us and facilitating the interactions. #IRISSProject #SafeAndSustainableByDesign #SSbD #CircularEconomy #SustainableMaterials #SustainableProcesses #Collaboration #IndustryPartnerships #SustainableChemicals #IRISSCommunity
