Euro Chlor supports a safe, sustainable and successful chlor-alkali industry for Europe. Chlorine, caustic soda/ potash and hydrogen (chlor-alkali) are essential building blocks for the manufacture of many of the products that we rely on every day. Across Europe, millions of jobs are dependent on the availability of competitively priced chlor-alkali supplies. Chlor-alkali chemistry is also vital for the development of the innovative materials that we will need in the future. Euro Chlor’s 38 producer members operate 62 manufacturing locations in 19 European countries, representing 97% of all European production capacity. Euro Chlor represents the interests of chlor-alkali producers in Europe, encourages best practices in safety, health and environmental protection, and promotes the economic and social benefits of chlor-alkali and the many industries that rely on it. Based in Brussels, Belgium, Euro Chlor is a sector group of Cefic (European Chemical Industry Council), which represents chemical companies across Europe, which directly provide 1.2 million jobs and account for 14.7% of world chemical production. Euro Chlor is a member of the World Chlorine Council, a global network of regional organizations that represents producers accounting for more than 80% of worldwide chlor-alkali production capacity. Cefic’s Director General Marco Mensink was honoured to join the “Water and the Competitiveness of European Industry” roundtable with Commissioner for the Environment, Water Resilience, and a Competitive Circular Economy, Jessika Roswall. 💧 Water is essential for our chemical industry’s operations. Yet climate change is affecting its availability and therefore our resilience. During this meeting, which will feed into the new EU Water Resilience Strategy, Marco shared the following messages: 🔹Water is a key resource for our industry’s resilience, essential for heating and cooling and our logistics operations. Without it, we lose resilience. 🔹Advancing solutions to improve water treatment and purification technologies means working together – collaboration is essential at all levels; between the water industry, the upstream value chain like the chemical sector, local governments and at EU level. 🔹 Flexibility needed at member state level - local authorities and stakeholders best understand the specific water basin specific conditions in their countries and regions. 🔹 A technology-neutral innovation approach that fully considers the energy-water nexus, is a key success factor in delivering efficient and sustainable solutions. The business case to transition to low-carbon and circular products is currently weak or lacking for the EU chemical industry 🚨. Why 🕵♂️? https://lnkd.in/eXJvuzuq These products generally come at a higher cost and there are not enough incentives for markets to pick up this so called green premium. Cefic published a view paper highlighting if and how demand side incentives for sustainable products (“market pull measures”) can contribute to a solution. In short: Both supply and demand side measures are needed, which must operate under a set of principles and conditions while using the right criteria to ensure their success and use the right criteria.
