About us

51N4E is a self-steering collective that wants to empower people to be both autonomous and connected. It does so by organizing the supportive processes needed for a collaborative design culture. This collaboration platform combines the internal studios with a growing network of external partners. As such, it mirrors today’s complex reality and produces an ecosystem of knowledge. 51N4E wants to respond in an agile way to the volatile nature of transformation processes. That is why we organize the diverse offer of our capacities and expertise in studios, clear in their scope and complimentary in their offer. Each develops its own programme and research lines, but they work together to address the complexity of transformation projects. Currently, 51N4E hosts the studios Cast and Acte, with the third studio Root in a test phase.

Yesterday, the RECAST inauguration was a rich evening of exchanges, and we were delighted by the public's presence and enthusiasm for the methodology developed through the collaboration between 51N4E and M-gineers. The panel discussion moderated by Bertrand Lafontaine on the theme of ‘Unlocking hidden value, the future of our existing building stock’ was an opportunity to exchange perspectives. With Dorien Fierens (Development Manager Brussel at Alides and Co-chairman of YUB - UPSI-BVS), Dirk Saelens (Professor at the KU Leuven, Head of the Department of Building Physics and Sustainable Construction) and Bart Herroelen (Managing Director at Vanhout), we were able to discuss the challenges and opportunities linked to the future of our existing building stock. A big thank you to everyone who helped make this event a success! We are pleased to announce that the 51N4E team has been shortlisted to participate in the international Quartiers de Demain consultation for the Pessac – Quartier de Saige site. The project involves the refurbishment and adaptive reuse of Tower 8, with the potential for replication, as well as the development of a green corridor linking the neighborhood to the town center and university campus. How can we give new life to a residential tower while valuing 20th-century heritage? How can the renovation of Tower 08 serve as a carbon impact demonstrator for the region (reuse, energy efficiency, energy production, bio-based materials, etc.)? How can a diversity of uses help shape a landscape design that is accessible to all, fostering a stronger connection with its surroundings? Our team is a collaboration between the European office 51N4E (lead), the French architecture and urban planning offices Plan Común and Lafayette Architectes Urbanistes, the French-Belgian landscape office ETABLISSEMENT paysage, the British environmental design consultancy atmos lab, and a group of experts based in Paris and Bordeaux: AÏDA - Atelier Indépendant D'Acoustique, Artelia (infrastructure), Creaspace (operational planning), CRONOS CONSEIL (situational prevention expertise), Diese (MEP), EGITURA (stability), and VPEAS (cost estimation). At 51N4E, we are engaged in many incremental, adaptive reuse projects that combine mixed programs, public spaces, diverse stakeholders, and technical requirements to create meaningful transformations. (Track, Circularium, Lageweg, ...) Now, we’re taking this expertise a step further by becoming part of the Lerend Netwerk Verweving, a 3-year trajectory that explores how Flemish municipalities can better integrate mixed programs in a smart, sustainable way. To kickstart this, we sent out a survey for Flemish municipalities to understand their challenges and opportunities. Your input is crucial in shaping the future of functional integration and spatial reuse. Share your insights before March 28 2025, via this link: https://lnkd.in/ertaTzJE

Just before the holidays, we received exciting news: we are assigned by the City of Brussels to study the future programming and spatial transformation of the Palais du Midi. The Palais du Midi is a monumental building spanning an entire urban block between the Lemonnier and Stalingrad Avenues, close to the Brussels South Station. Originally built around a covered market hall, it is currently home to sports facilities and three schools. Part of the site will have to be repurposed after the completion of the new Metro Line 3. Together with Idea Consult (focusing on programmation and financial feasibility), Particitiz and Callida SRL/BV (engaging with a diverse citizen panel), and M-gineers, we will explore future possibilities for this site. Over the next year, our team will develop spatial and programmatic scenarios to lay the groundwork for an architectural project, with attention to local, municipal, and regional dynamics. To accompany us throughout the process, we will establish a diverse citizen panel, involving randomly selected citizens, users and field actors. #51N4E

This week we are presenting our finalized offer in the competitive dialogue for the fourth and final chapter of Île de Nantes. After more than 20 years of ongoing development, the project initiated by Samoa and supported by the mayor Johanna Rolland is taking a change of direction, affirming a "frank and concrete ecological bifurcation", where the city redefines its relationship with nature and climate.   The ecological and social masterplan aims to transform the island into a resilient territory, drastically reducing carbon emissions (to 2 tonnes of CO2 per inhabitant by 2040), while ensuring the territory's habitability and strengthening its exceptional natural ecology. It includes the creation of a 10-hectare ‘Parc de Loire’, an inclusive mixed neighborhood with diverse housing, based on an innovative citizen co-construction approach.    Our European consortium between 51N4E, Lafayette, Etablissement and Plant en Houtgoed brings insights from Belgium to France while ensuring a local implementation. Nantes has become a hub for innovative approaches to incremental reuse, particularly in projects that transform and revitalize existing spaces.   We look forward to a collaborative exchange of ideas, with the aim of gaining valuable perspectives to inform our ongoing work in sustainable development and urban regeneration. We are looking for a new member to join our Adaptive Infrastructure team. If you have a deep interest and the necessary skillset to think and design infrastructure with strong ecologic, spatial and social awareness, we are looking for you. Within 51N4E our Adaptive Infrastructure projects are strongly linked with other programs such as Performative Landscapes, Civic Design, and Transformative Densification. Inside 51N4E’s collaborative working environment, you will be working on projects across scales that challenge the status quo in design and planning and seek novel outlooks on how we design cities, landscapes, and communities. Together we will think about questions such as: How can cities develop with concern for all living beings? How to create networks beyond engineering? When does infrastructure become a lived environment? Candidates must share a profound interest and experience in primary outdoor structures ranging from bridges, ecologic connections, canopies, or other. We are looking for team players with more than 3 years of experience who can contribute technical and conceptual expertise towards a multi-faceted design process. Proficiency in Dutch is preferred. Please send your CV and your selection of work samples to HR@51N4E.com by July 14th. Please include “AI/OPS_Medior” in the title of your email.
