🌍 Transforming São Cristóvão: Pioneering Climate-Resilient Urbanism 🏙️ We are excited to present our ambitious project for São Cristóvão, Rio de Janeiro, developed in collaboration with Anu Atoyebi under the expert mentorship of Professors Jeffrey Raven, PhD, FAIA, LEED BD.C , and Jeannette Sordi. Our initiative aims to transform São Cristóvão from an industrial hub into a vibrant, climate-resilient urban district. Guided by New York Tech’s Urban Design Studio (ARCH-702) and in partnership with Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio), our project addresses urgent climate adaptation needs while promoting equitable spatial development. The Urban Design Climate Workshop, held from March 27 to April 7, brought together a multidisciplinary team to tackle São Cristóvão’s challenges. Our design strategy focuses on harnessing the district’s unique assets, including its rich cocoa heritage and mangrove ecosystems. We propose revitalizing industrial areas, enhancing green infrastructure, and improving connectivity to foster a resilient and sustainable community. This framework not only celebrates São Cristóvão’s cultural and ecological strengths but also sets a new benchmark for integrating economic growth with environmental stewardship. Through this transformative approach, we aspire to create a model for equitable urban development that can inspire cities worldwide. Liebling Haus serves as Tel Aviv’s one-stop center for the UNESCO World Heritage-listed White City, renowned for its iconic Bauhaus architecture. Yet, the deeper framework of Geddes’ Garden City vision is known to only a few. Geddes famously stated, “A city is more than a place in space, it is a drama in time.” In today’s context—amid the Data Revolution and the ongoing climate crisis—this insight rings truer than ever. The urgent need to harmonize urban spaces with nature, support social justice, and mitigate land speculation are essential for building sustainable cities. As we gather to celebrate, I envision Geddes in our Liebling coffee shop, urging us to make this drama a call to action. As an architect, I can’t help but admire the beauty of Paris. Paris has had a profound influence on urbanism worldwide, largely due to the city’s transformation under Baron Haussmann in the 19th century. His redesign introduced wide boulevards, uniform building facades, grand public spaces, and modern infrastructure, which became a model for cities across Europe and beyond. The focus on beauty, functionality, and quality of life inspired urban planning movements, from the City Beautiful movement in the U.S. to the design of cities like Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, and Tokyo. Paris also popularized the concept of integrating green spaces within urban settings, a practice many cities have since embraced. But what’s next?
