Our 2,000+ individual members represent over 40 professional groups interested in the promotion of public health. We have branches in every State and Territory. Public health is largely absent from the election commitments made by the two major political parties. We published our Election Scorecard today, rating the commitments made by the Australian Labor Party, Liberal National Party Coalition, and the Greens against seven priorities put forward by public health experts. Adjunct Professor Terry Slevin, CEO, Public Health Association of Australia says that while both major political parties have made significant health promises, the election campaign is missing the mark when it comes to Australians’ health. “Our Election Scorecard shows that there is one clear difference between the two parties when it comes to their position on plans for Australia’s Centre for Disease Control. “But what neither party seems to be talking about is how we are going to reduce the pressure on the health system and keep more Australians out of our already strained hospitals and doctors’ waiting rooms. “National expenditure on health is growing rapidly and now sits at around $250 billion a year – but alarmingly, only around three percent of that spending goes to initiatives that are going to stop Australians from getting sick in the first place." We are urging Federal Election candidates to commit to initiatives that will keep Australians well. Read the scorecard analysis: https://lnkd.in/gsh_KwcK Media release: https://lnkd.in/gzFA-xw4

Public health experts are calling for the next Federal Government to stop junk food ads targeting children, after new research showed that the issue is a concern for 85% of caregivers. The new study of almost 4000 adults, led by Deakin University and published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, showed that there was a high level of support amongst Australian adults for Government initiatives that would help protect children from unhealthy food marketing. We see a future where the environment and our communities are healthy and thriving. But this future is only possible if the next Australian Government acts boldly to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. The World Meteorological Organization has confirmed that 2024 was the warmest year on record and the past ten years have all seen record-breaking high temperatures. Decades of Australian Government inaction on emissions reduction has caused a dual crisis for governments and communities to respond to. Ahead of the federal election, we're calling on all political parties to commit to reducing fossil fuel reliance, and make a plan to adapt homes, health systems, public infrastructure, and food systems for the challenges of a changing climate. In the 1970s and 80s, Australia created Medicare – one of the world’s best national health insurance schemes. The Medicare scheme ensures all Australians can access affordable medical care, creating a more equitable, socially cohesive, and productive nation. Contrast Medicare with health insurance in the United States, for example, where countless individuals and families experience hardship and even bankruptcy when health emergencies strike. That doesn’t happen in Australia. But at the creation of Medicare, one key section of health prevention and treatment was left out: dental and oral care. We think it's time to change that. https://lnkd.in/g8AUTMUb Malcolm Baalman #OralHealth #VoteForPublicHealth
