  • If you’ve learned anything about behaviour change, behavioural design or behavioural economics, you’ll know that knowledge does not automatically equal action. However, when it comes to developing a behaviour change practice in our own organisations, it’s easy to get stuck at knowledge. Learning all the theories of behaviour change is great, but how do you turn that knowledge and intention into action? How do you get started? Join MAKE Studios for a practical and energising session designed to help you close the gap between learning and doing when it comes to behaviour change. Featuring: Fiona Meighan – Director of Innovation at MAKE Studios Melbourne and Open Innovator at STREAT  Kate Barrelle – Chief Impact Officer and Co-Founder at STREAT Angela Bliss – Behavioural Science and Customer Experience leader Michael Trudgeon – Professor of Design at RMIT University & Director at Crowd Productions Register to secure your spot: https://lnkd.in/gXSG-VVq You can also submit a live challenge for our panel to work on at the event so you can see how they bring theory to life in a hands-on, collaborative way. We look forward to seeing you at our offices at Gate 8, East Melbourne. • Momentum Energy set out to create a compelling new offering for their business customers – one that truly met their needs. MAKE Studios Melbourne were invited to partner with them to do just that, over two projects. Together we took a customer-centric approach to designing, launching, and scaling Momentum’s business energy products. Through deep customer research, customer experience design, and prototyping, a service offering was created to deliver real value to business owners. • Welcome to February – how are your 2025 resolutions going? If you’ve had trouble sticking to the plans and resolutions you made just over a month ago, you’re not alone – a 2007 study by Professor Richard Wiseman found that a massive 88% of New Year’s Resolutions fail. The good news is, you don’t have to wait until 31 December to build a new habit – you can start today, and with the right approach, you can make changes that last. At MAKE Studios, we know that lasting change is built on more than just willpower. To truly make progress, we need to understand and apply the principles of behaviour change. Here are two powerful strategies to help you stick to your 2025 goals: 1. Start small: Rather than overwhelming yourself with big, unattainable goals, focus on very small, achievable habits. Want to get healthier? Instead of committing to an hour at the gym, start by doing five minutes of stretching each morning. Over time, these small changes will add up to bigger, more sustainable results. 2. Pre-Commit: When we make a decision in advance, we're more likely to follow through. Pre-committing means making a commitment and setting up a system of accountability. This could mean signing up for a course or sharing your goal with a friend. So, if you’re starting over, with a #FreshStartFebruary resolution, try taking a more strategic approach to your goals. At MAKE Studios, we apply behaviour change principles to help organisations and individuals drive meaningful, lasting behaviour change. Whether it’s creating more sustainable practices, improving employee engagement, or shifting company culture. Get in touch if you’re looking to make lasting, positive change in your organisation, or you’d like to learn more about behaviour change. #BehaviourChange #BehaviorChange #NewYearsResolutions #PreCommitment #SustainableChange #GrowthMindset #GoalSetting #TinyHabits #AtomicHabits

  • Make this festive season fun, sustainable, and low-waste! As we enter the festive season – a time of celebration, connection, and, of course, lots of delicious food – it’s also a time when food waste tends to spike. At MAKE Studios, we believe in the power of behaviour change to tackle this issue, through our work with STREAT, Moving Feast Victoria and the Purpose Precinct. On Saturday, 25 January 2025, we’re running a special workshop in our crowd-favourite Kitchen Alchemy workshop series – Low-Waste Entertaining! • This year, Melbourne’s first community battery was switched on, as part of Power Melbourne, an initiative that will help the City of Melbourne meet its goal of being 100% powered by renewable energy by 2030. We’ve written a case study on our collaborations with the City of Melbourne team that informed Power Melbourne: https://lnkd.in/ghD2zuKt The progress that the team has made towards a renewable and accessible energy future for Melbourne over the past five years is remarkable. We’re proud of the role MAKE Studios Melbourne has played in this journey, engaging with Melbourne residents and businesses to understand their needs and prototyping renewable energy models that are accessible for people who can’t access rooftop solar. In it, we highlight the value of visualising complex concepts and the importance of starting with the community’s needs, rather than simply applying existing solutions to new contexts. Thank you to Liam Henderson, Kim Le Cerf, John Griffiths, Tim Hoban and Mel Miller-Yule for being such fabulous collaborators, and keeping the momentum up on this important work! • MAKE is so thrilled to have been part of the SIPTEMBER campaigns from their inception in 2019 to this year. We’re thrilled to announce that STREAT’s Siptember campaign has won Keep Australia Beautiful VIC Tidy Towns and Cities Sustainability Awards in the City: Behaviour Change Campaigns and Education category! 🎉 Feeling both delighted and honoured, especially given the amazing finalists we were up against! This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work that's gone into the campaign since it began in 2019. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported SIPTEMBER and has taken part in the campaign, especially our key partner, MAKE Studios Melbourne—who have collaborated with STREAT, helping craft and implement the campaign over the years, essential for setting it up for success. The secret to our campaign lies in a range of behavioural change techniques, tailored across various cafes and contexts. We emphasised that small habits can lead to significant change, impacting individuals, organisations, and systems alike and sharing how each cafe is tracking has really helped customers see the small difference they're making translates to a much bigger change. A staggering fact: 1.8 billion cups end up in landfill every year. This campaign illustrates that every effort counts, and even the smallest actions can create a ripple effect. We’re also excited to share that we have expanded our SIPTEMBER campaign to include reusable containers! "Excitingly, we've gone open source, so other cafes can take part using our toolkit - so we've had participants from the UK, interstate and regional Victoria, and we invite others to take part in 2025." notes Fiona Meighan, who has helped lead the campaign. Importantly, thank you to each and every customer who borrows or brings a reusable cup, we absolutely can't do it without you.

  • Three years ago Fiona Smith ran a low-waste Halloween workshop, carving pineapple jack-o-lanterns, as a creative response to a glut of pineapples in Australia, and a way to start a conversation about food waste, food systems and our contribution to Open Sauce, an initiative lead by STREAT and Moving Feast Victoria talking food waste. Three years later, we're still working towards a better food system and we're still teaching workshops that help fight food waste – these days, they're at the Moving Feast Kitchen at the Purpose Precinct, making delicious food from produce that might otherwise go to waste. Let us know if you'd like to join the next one!

Happy #glutwatch Halloween! Yesterday, we ran a workshop carving jack-o-lanterns out of pineapples, instead of pumpkins, in response to the glut of Queensland grown pineapples. It was part of our involvement in Open Sauce, an initiative with STREAT and the Moving Feast collective that is tackling food waste to create a more regenerative food system. It was so much fun to share the workshop experience with everyone who joined via Zoom and Instagram Live and to see the creative tropical jack-o-lanterns everyone made! Thank you to Fiona Smith for running the session and Rebecca Scott, OAM for sharing the story of Open Sauce while we carved. You can watch the video of the workshop on the MAKE Studios instagram account, here: https://lnkd.in/gbcC_Nqk #foodsystems #sustainability #opensauce #pineapple #halloween

  • That’s a wrap! Our latest Drawing for Work online workshop facilitated by Fiona Smith and Lindsay L. was a fun-filled event for participants eager to level up their visual communication skills at work. After building up our sketching skills and visual libraries, our participants took on concepts like strategy, teamwork, fitness, mastery and workflows, bringing them to life in ways that were visually engaging and easy to understand. While online workshops are great, nothing beats our in-person workshops, to get the full energy and experience of learning as a team. Get in touch if you’d like to book a drawing workshop for your team! A huge thank you to everyone for bringing such great energy to the workshop and sharing your sketches and reflections to learn, grow and be inspired by each other. Dr Lucija Medojevic, Kriti Bajaj, Julian Harrington, Luis Gaitan, Kylie Brown, Handy Kartika, Pru Burns, Cynthia Mononutu, Joey Ho, Shaun McAlpine, Paris Jarvis-Barker, Michael Tam, Jnel Buchy, Lou Salomé Chou, Michelle Lam, please let us know how you us your new sketching skills! #visualcommunication #drawing #sketchnotes #drawingforwork

  • MAKE Studios Melbourne reposted this

I'm teaching MAKE Studios Melbourne's crowd-favourite workshop, Drawing for Work, next Friday 11 October. If you've seen any of my sketches of conference talks and want to develop your own visual note-taking skills, this workshop is a great place to start! Taking visual notes has been shown to improve memory retention, and I love being able to share visuals of talks I've been to that have inspired me. As a designer, the ability to do quick sketches is a super power! All MAKERs learn to draw in this style when they join the team. We like to sketch everything from problem exploration and sense-making, prototypes and storyboards, to final reports with visual metaphors that help bring important insights to life. I hope you can make it!
