I'm teaching MAKE Studios Melbourne's crowd-favourite workshop, Drawing for Work, next Friday 11 October. If you've seen any of my sketches of conference talks and want to develop your own visual note-taking skills, this workshop is a great place to start! Taking visual notes has been shown to improve memory retention, and I love being able to share visuals of talks I've been to that have inspired me. As a designer, the ability to do quick sketches is a super power! All MAKERs learn to draw in this style when they join the team. We like to sketch everything from problem exploration and sense-making, prototypes and storyboards, to final reports with visual metaphors that help bring important insights to life. If you're wondering what I mean by sketches of talks, here's one I did last week at Chargefox, of a fabulous talk by Andy McCarthy. Andy spoke for about 45 mins, and I sketched this out as he spoke and shared it with Andy and the team straight afterward. It was great to have a visual record of the talk for us to all refer back to, but more importantly, it helped me to focus and process the information in the session, highlighting the key points that interested me the most.
