The growing number of Australians developing chronic health conditions is a serious concern for the future of our health system. That's why action is so important. My health for life is a vital part of this action with free health coaching, empowering the Queensland community to make positive changes for better health, and reduce the burden of chronic disease. We’re excited to share their fresh new look, embodying the same dedication to health just with a modern refresh. My health for life is funded by the Queensland Government through Health and Wellbeing Queensland, and is available to adult Queenslanders.
We’re thrilled to introduce a refreshed look and renewed commitment as My health for life, your healthy habits helper. Our reinvigorated purpose is to be the companion and supporter of our participants. We might look a little different, but one thing remains the same – we’re committed to supporting adult Queenslanders to create healthier habits they can live with. My health for life is a chronic disease prevention initiative with FREE, qualified Health Coaches for the patients of health professionals. Primary Healthcare Professionals play a critical role in the community for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke prevention, as patients turn to health professionals as the source of guidance. Now, more than ever, you can feel confident in referring your eligible patients into a free, evidence-based behaviour change initiative funded by the Queensland Government through Health and Wellbeing Queensland My health for life is delivered by The Healthier Queensland Alliance: a partnership, led by Diabetes Australia that includes the Heart Foundation, Stroke Foundation the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC), Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland and Queensland Primary Health Networks. #myhealthforlife #diabetesaustralia #strokefoundation #healthierqueenslandalliance #healthandwellbeingqueensland #healthierchoices #healthierhabits #createhealthierhabits #preventionbetterthancure #chronicdiseaseprevention

Big shout out to the ongoing efforts of the working group who have co-designed our Action Plan to improve the airport screening experience for people living with diabetes. Since the round table last year, this group (comprising people living with diabetes, health professionals, industry, device manufacturers and more) has developed a suite of practical actions and initiatives to drive change. Last week we caught up with the group to plan out the implementation of these actions. Soon we will share a summary of the actions and the plans to implement. Stay tuned… We know how important this work is because we continue to hear stories about people’s horrible experiences. It’s devastating and, with the support of the working group and many others, we’re determined to change these experiences.

📣 OPEN LETTER TO THE DIABETES RESEARCH COMMUNITY In December 2024, we, Diabetes Australia, announced a $40 million investment commitment to diabetes research over the next decade – the largest ever commitment to diabetes research by a non-government funder in Australia. Diabetes Australia’s leadership of research into all aspects of diabetes is crucial as the national peak body, representing the approximately 2 million Australians living with all types of diabetes and those at significant risk. Over the past 100+ years, research has led to better understanding and the development of new technologies and medicines that have transformed the lives of people living with all types of diabetes. But there is more to do. The number of Australians living with diabetes continues to rise, including a 33 percent increase in people living with type 2 diabetes over the past decade. Diabetes complications continue to have a devastating impact on people’s lives and the health system. There remains the imperative to build on the valiant efforts and investment to-date to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Despite this great need to do more, funding for diabetes research has declined by more than 36 percent over the past decade. Our commitment, which we will use to expand and extend the combined research efforts of the entire Australian research ecosystem – universities, private sector and government, seeks to address this erosion of funding. Working in collaboration with partners, we believe that we can have a profound and significant impact on Australia’s world-class diabetes research sector and to meaningfully contribute to the life changing benefits that it can achieve. Following extensive consultation during 2024, we will soon release a new research strategy for diabetes in Australia, that is aligned with feedback from across the sector and importantly includes the feedback of Australians living with diabetes, and those at risk. Our ambitious approach to research responds to the challenges being faced by the sector and will harness the opportunities new technologies like artificial intelligence promise. Our very significant financial commitment and fresh strategy will drive research to positively change the lives of people living with diabetes. We are pleased to welcome Nicole McMahon as the new Chief of Impact & Innovation at Diabetes Australia. Nicole has a background as a research scientist in HIV gene therapy and autoimmune diseases and in science communication. She has spent the majority of her career as an executive, driving outcomes in ICT, health and government. Based in Canberra, she is passionate about health reform, changing the national conversation and delivering real outcomes. “I am thrilled to join an organisation with such a clear purpose, and the potential to make a real and lasting impact. I have an incredible team of passionate individuals driving engagement, strategy, advocacy, innovation and research outcomes. We are committed to making a difference for those living with, and at risk of, diabetes." “Not all diabetes is preventable - and it is important that we begin to address the stigma. However, 58 per cent of type 2 diabetes is preventable. There is a lot we can do to reduce diabetes related complications. By raising awareness, and through community education, we can improve the health and wellbeing of millions of Australians, and at the same time reduce the burden of the condition on our healthcare system.” We look forward to Nicole's leadership as we collectively strive towards our shared value of reducing the impact of diabetes on all Australians living with, or at risk of diabetes.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) is urging the diabetes community to remain vigilant after counterfeit Ozempic-labelled injection pens have been detected at the Australian border. These pose a serious risk to consumer health. If you have a product marked with batch number MPSD916, do not use it. Take it to your local pharmacy for safe disposal. This acts as an important reminder that medications should only be purchased from legitimate Australian pharmacies and not online or from overseas sources. Guide Dog Evie stole the show at today’s Vision 2020 Australia event at #ParliamentHouse 🐶 We joined Vision 2020 Australia members to meet with #QueenslandMPs at Parliament House to talk about eye health and vision loss. While it was hard to compete with the gorgeous Guide Dog Evie we did manage to hold their attention long enough to share some sobering statistics about diabetes prevalence in Queensland electorates, and the impact of #KeepSight in reducing the incidence of preventable blindness. Regular checks ups are the single most important thing people can do to reduce their risk of vision loss from diabetes.
