A total of $58.8 million in subcontracts has been awarded to Territory enterprises to build the Darwin Ship Lift Facility. The subcontracts include: ·        supply of quarry materials ·        surveying ·        geotechnical services ·        maintenance ·        traffic control ·        construction equipment ·        civil construction. The Darwin Ship Lift Facility will establish Darwin as a key maritime maintenance centre in northern Australia, servicing the defence, energy, pearling, fishing and coastal cruising industries. 58% of the people working on the ship lift facility site at East Arm are Territory locals. BMD’s cohort of 47 graduates have built four new dugouts for the Wynnum Manly Seagulls Juniors club in a 36-hour challenge that saw the use of 800 metres of timber, 2800 screws and bolts, and 60 bags of rapid-set concrete - amongst many inches of rain! The new dugouts provide young players with a space to rest, recover and strategise during games and will greatly improve their overall experience, particularly as they play over the warmer months. The massive effort was supported by many areas of the BMD business, an example of our enduring approach towards collaboration and commitment to delivering infrastructure that benefits communities. Major Thornlands landholders Urbex Pty Ltd (a BMD Group company) and Harridan have welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement to unlock the Southern Thornlands for housing development to meet local demand for affordable homes. BMD CEO Scott Power and General Manager of Urbex Carl Bruhn joined Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning and Minister for Industrial Relations The Honourable Jarrod Bleijie MP and Assistant Minister to the Deputy Premier and Assistant Minister for Planning, Housing and Better Regulation Rebecca Young for the announcement. General Manager of Urbex Carl Bruhn said: “Urbex and Harridan are committed to delivering a broad, attractive and affordable housing mix for people in the Redlands, with a planned early release of land bordering Springacre Road – subject to approvals. This is more than just about housing. We want to create a community with a place for everyone – for our mums, our grandparents, our children and people who need housing that is affordable.” The Southern Thornlands PDA area spans 890 hectares and once fully developed, will be home to about 8,000 new homes, new shopping centres, parkland and community facilities.
