In the 10 years that we’ve been consulting on corporate culture, we’ve had the pleasure and privilege of meeting people from 450+ companies of every size, across every industry imaginable. And, even given the time-span and diversity, a very interesting pattern has emerged. We see over and over again that companies trip over the same 3 stumbling blocks: · Clarity. · Communication. · Trust. The thing is, we often face the same challenges in our teams as well… So I made a short video about it 👇 For those who prefer to read, here’s a broad outline: Lack of clarity: When people don’t know the vision, values, and goals, or even what’s expected of them daily, confusion creeps in. Without clarity, people disengage, misalign, and waste energy on the wrong things. Communication gaps: There are many reasons for messaging not being expressed clearly. But, if a company’s direction, decisions, and expectations aren’t simply and consistently reinforced, human nature will kick in and people will fill in the gaps with their own assumptions. Do you remember playing ‘broken telephone’ as a child? That’s essentially what happens when communication isn’t done right, and that’s how ‘the deadline is Friday’ becomes ‘define a fried egg’. Broken trust: The giving and receiving of trust are essential aspects of high-performance teams in a thriving culture. But, again, human nature is what it is, and it’s inevitable that we’ll all be disappointed at some stage. The trick lies in how broken trust is addressed… Because it can be rebuilt. The good news is actually that all 3 of these challenges are fixable, and I’ll be focusing on them in coming posts.
