This document summarizes a study that used level set methods to segment teeth from CBCT scans. It describes segmenting both anterior and posterior teeth in 3D for use in dental treatment planning. The level set method uses five energy functions including edge, region, shape prior, and dentine wall thickness energies. It was tested on 12 patient scans containing around 600 slices total. Results showed the method could accurately segment individual tooth crowns and roots in 3D with average segmentation time of 228 seconds per tooth. The segmented teeth could then be reconstructed in 3D for use by dentists in treatment simulation and planning.
