Cloud migration involves moving data, applications, and other business elements from an organization's on-premises servers to the cloud. There are different approaches to cloud migration such as shallow integration which moves applications to the cloud without changes, deep integration which modifies applications to use cloud capabilities, refactoring applications to optimize them for the cloud, and retiring old applications in favor of SaaS solutions. Successful cloud migration requires planning such as assessing what to migrate, choosing cloud providers and environments, determining architecture, selecting providers, planning the migration process, and reviewing after migration. While cloud migration provides benefits, it also carries risks such as complex architectures not working correctly in the cloud, loss of control over data, and increased latency.
This document discusses the concept of "Everything as Code" and provides an overview of related topics including:
- Architecture as code to simplify design and eliminate integration issues
- Infrastructure as code to automate deployments for scaling and multi-cloud/platform support
- Network as code for source control management and a single source of truth
- Policy as code for authorization control and provisioning infrastructure according to requirements
- Securing CI/CD pipelines and tools mentioned include Terraform, Ansible, ARM templates, Sentinel, and Harness.io.

Hybridize Functions: A Tool for Automatically Refactoring Imperative Deep Lea...Raffi Khatchadourian
Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code—supporting symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged but at the expense of run-time performance. Though hybrid approaches aim for the “best of both worlds,” using them effectively requires subtle considerations to make code amenable to safe, accurate, and efficient graph execution—avoiding performance bottlenecks and semantically inequivalent results. We discuss the engineering aspects of a refactoring tool that automatically determines when it is safe and potentially advantageous to migrate imperative DL code to graph execution and vice-versa.

Challenges in Migrating Imperative Deep Learning Programs to Graph Execution:...Raffi Khatchadourian
Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code that supports symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development tends to produce DL code that is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, less error-prone imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. While hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," the challenges in applying them in the real world are largely unknown. We conduct a data-driven analysis of challenges---and resultant bugs---involved in writing reliable yet performant imperative DL code by studying 250 open-source projects, consisting of 19.7 MLOC, along with 470 and 446 manually examined code patches and bug reports, respectively. The results indicate that hybridization: (i) is prone to API misuse, (ii) can result in performance degradation---the opposite of its intention, and (iii) has limited application due to execution mode incompatibility. We put forth several recommendations, best practices, and anti-patterns for effectively hybridizing imperative DL code, potentially benefiting DL practitioners, API designers, tool developers, and educators.

DevOpsDays SLC - Platform Engineers are Product Managers.pptxJustin Reock
Platform Engineers are Product Managers: 10x Your Developer Experience
Discover how adopting this mindset can transform your platform engineering efforts into a high-impact, developer-centric initiative that empowers your teams and drives organizational success.
Platform engineering has emerged as a critical function that serves as the backbone for engineering teams, providing the tools and capabilities necessary to accelerate delivery. But to truly maximize their impact, platform engineers should embrace a product management mindset. When thinking like product managers, platform engineers better understand their internal customers' needs, prioritize features, and deliver a seamless developer experience that can 10x an engineering team’s productivity.
In this session, Justin Reock, Deputy CTO at DX (getdx.com), will demonstrate that platform engineers are, in fact, product managers for their internal developer customers. By treating the platform as an internally delivered product, and holding it to the same standard and rollout as any product, teams significantly accelerate the successful adoption of developer experience and platform engineering initiatives.

Editor's Notes
#2: Header Slide - Intro
Today we are here to discuss a key component of business transformation, IT Resilience and how to leverage Zerto to protect and transform your IT whilst driving innovation to support business growth.
#3: Digital Transformation is impacting all industries
In 2018, analysts highlighted that 1 in 3 organizations had a formal DX initiative. Why? Well by 2022, it is expected that 60% of global GDP will be digitized. Driven by digitally enhanced offerings, operations and relationships, business and IT must transform evolving people, process and technology to better address new markets, new competitors and business models while meeting the new expectations of customers. This is leading to $7 Trillion in IT related spending through 2022. To thrive in the digital economy you must transform! 50% of the Global 2000 that existed 20 years ago have either been acquired or are no longer in business.
Alternate notes:
Traditional Business models are being challenged, and its really about survival, within the last 20 years years we have seen 50% of the global 2000 either been bought out or no longer exist so companies must transform to survive.
Customer expectations have changed and they expect more …...New technologies are creating new markets, new competitors and new business models..
To succeed in the digital world, businesses must not only provide superior customer experiences, but deliver on their promises in a faster, more nimble way.
Additional supporting notes:
By 2022, over 60% of global GDP will be digitized, with growth in every industry driven by digitally-enhanced offerings, operations and relationship -driving almost $7 trillion in IT-related spending from 2019 through 2022.
First of all, it's a matter of pure survival. The facts are ominous: 88 percent of Fortune 500 companies in the 1950s no longer exist, and 50 percent of the Global 2000 from just 20 years ago have either been bought out or no longer exist.
#4: A digital strategy includes IT transformation
To meet the pace of transformation needed to stay on top you must have a Digital Strategy that includes IT Transformation. According to IDC, 75% of successful digital strategies will be built on transformed IT organization. Data is the currency that fuels your success. Through IT transformation you can ensure your data and business services it supplies are always available allowing you to meet the pace of business required in digital economy.
To achieve speed of decisions and innovation you must simplify and modernize. This provides you with the agility needed to maximize the advantages of cloud for IT and business optimization while meeting business requirements for resilience. In a recent survey from ESG , 81% of business leaders agree that if they do not embrace IT Transformation, their firm will no longer be competitive in their market.
Alternate Notes:
A digital strategy must include the transformation of IT and is paramount for transforming & maximizing the business benefits of data assets and technology-focused initiatives in this digital era.
Speed, Resilience and agility, are essential components of a successful digital strategy and IT transformation
Speed at which a company can move to outpace competitive threats can only be achieved through a modernized and simplified IT. Businesses can’t be rooted in legacy systems and processes. Ultimately you want your teams focused on business-generating activity not on maintaining infrastructure.
Resilience with no downtime and data loss ensure a consistent digital experience and minimize the risk of business and brand disruption. IT must ensure there is no downtime and be ready to address any potential disruption
Agility : Companies need to leverage cloud to increase agility and react quickly to changing conditions…. And essential for business innovation.
Additional notes
In a recent survey from ESG , 81% of business leaders agree that if they do not embrace IT Transformation, their firm will no longer be competitive in their market
According to IDC 75% of successful digital strategies will be built by a transformed IT organization.
By 2021, over 75% of midsize and large organizations will have adopted a multi cloud and/or hybrid IT strategy
By 2022, public cloud services will be essential for 90% of business innovation
#5: IT Transformation Challenges –
Digital has changed Customers expectation – not only your external customers , partners but internal customers and employees……..
with more than 7 billion people and businesses, and at least 30 billion devices, will be connected to the Internet and we all have a high expectation of availability………..
Technology is changing at a phenomenal rate and the complexity of IT has risen dramatically…. Data is growing exponentially (200billion terabytes by 2025) and so workloads have become more diverse, mobile and disparate across different platforms and geographic regions , whether that’s from the edge, the Core or the cloud.
All this needs to be connected to deliver a consistent digital customer experience
In a recent IDC survey- 50% of companies surveyed have suffered an unrecoverable data event in the last 3 years. Systemic Risk of downtime from disruptions to the business presents a great challenge and puts your brand and reputation at risk.
All applications that impacts a customer experience must be protected and available 24/7 to meet today’s expectations from customers
#6: Transform through IT Resilience
A component of IT Transformation is IT resilience which is the ability accelerate your transformation by allowing you to adapt to change without disruption to the business
IT Resilience allows you to react quickly to unplanned disruptive events and protect during your planned disruptive events, effectively, accelerating data-oriented business initiatives. IT Resilience is the path to achieving continuous availability of business and IT.
#7: IT Resilience Requirements
First and fore most IT Resilience must include Close-to-continuous IT and business operations
It Is a multi-function converged product segment that has evolved from backup, Disaster Recovery , run book automation, replication, orchestration and others
Its scope must include multi data center and multi-cloud mobility and protection
And lastly Functionality to include IT operations resilience and cyber attack mitigation to respond quickly to potentially disruptive events in order to sustain business and IT operations
#8: IT Resilience Core Pillars
Delivering IT resilience is based on three key pillars:
Continuous DR & Backup – To Protect against any disruption – Whether planned or unplanned and deliver an always-on customer experience your Backup and DR must be continuous and not periodic or snapshot based, this is the only way to ensure continuous availability with no downtime or data loss.
Workload Mobility – from migrations, consolidations and moving to new infrastructures – you have the confidence to move your business applications and data workloads with ease, without risk and be 100% protected along the way.
Multi-Cloud and hybrid cloud – Leveraging cloud to accelerate your business, and truly take advantage of what cloud offers, ensuring you have the freedom to choose your cloud and be able to move to, from or between clouds
These pillars ensure you can withstand any disruption, leverage new technology seamlessly, and move forward with confidence.
#9: The journey IT Resilience
The first step on the journey to IT Resilience is to remove systemic risk which means converging and automating your Disaster Recovery and Backup processes, making sure that your business is protected against any disruption so you can deliver a 24/7 experience and ensure business SLAs are met.
By automating your Disaster Recovery and Backup processes, it reduces staff workload, reduces costs, and provides better protection for those unplanned disruptions
Resources can then be shifted to focus executing a multi-cloud and hybrid cloud strategy with freedom to move from, to and between clouds to provide the agility your business needs
Intelligent data workload placement anywhere, whether on-prem or cloud allows infrastructure modernization to move beyond your legacy applications and evolve your operations and business…
Operational efficiency will be achieved by having your resources aligned to better support the growth of the business and continued transformation allowing IT to deliver at the speed of the business
#10: We deliver this through our IT Resilience Platform..
#11: Zerto IT Resilience Platform
The Zerto IT Resilience Platform is a converged solution that replaces multiple products:
Continuous DR and backup –gives you DVR-like abilities to rewind back and resume from any point in time to protect against logical & hardware failures, human mistakes, and natural disasters. Recovery is can be hyper-granular and allows you to resume from just seconds ago—or days, months or years…..
Multi cloud and hybrid cloud mobility or portability – to be protected as you to go to, from and between clouds without vendor lock in .
Migration capability to move across on-premises hypervisors environments and/or clouds with no vendor lock in on storage or hardware
Orchestration and automation – that’s built in to the platform as you can’t modernize and innovate if it’s not automated and simple.
Analytics and Control to provide complete visibility across multi-site, multi-cloud environments to ensure SLAs of the business are met.
Our platform is based on a foundation of Continuous Data Protection, ensuring no downtime or data loss, it’s the core of enabling resilience. It allows you to reduce your resource requirements for managing infrastructure, so you can drive new efficiencies across IT and innovate faster delivering at the speed of business.
#12: The Zerto Difference
Its about the single platform built for continuous availability, data protection, and workload mobility to, from, and between on-premises and multi clouds
#13: Thanks to the rapid evolution of technology and trends like mobile, cloud and big data, customers experiences are becoming more personalized and engaging,
And the more customers get the more their expectations increase…
The business must deliver and relies on to IT for the technology needed to meet the ever-increasing demands.
IT must constantly evaluate and integrate new technologies into their operations, to keep pace with expectations and to ensure an always on experience.
…but what does transformation mean?
#14: Pain - Disruptions will happen and are costly and damaging to the brand
With Zerto, be prepared, before disruptions. Easy to use, test and manage
In this slide, mention how we are good at managing disruptions - how are we better at this than others?
CDP – no agents or snapshots – means low RTO/ RPO and no production slow-down
Orchestration & automation built in (nothing manual)
Easy failover testing to prove recovery will work when you need it
Good story to tell:
Ulta Beauty
Ulta needed a solution that would give them business continuity as downtime would result in their distribution centers, online processing and loyalty program not being operational
Before Zerto: RPO - 24 Hours, RTO - 3 Hours
After Zerto RPO - 7 seconds, RTO - Under 5 minutes
Woodforest Bank in Texas has one datacenter in a hurricane-prone zone, and the other in a tornado-prone zone. They use Zerto to proactively failover their entire datacenter twice a year, to completely avoid potential natural disasters.
#15: Pain – disruption and cost to business, reputation and brand suffer
Outcome – with Zerto: avoid downtime entirely by rolling back to previous point in time
Unique solution, allows for a “rewind” to seconds before a ransomware attack
Data writes are made to a journal, allowing for application-consistent checkpoints up to 30 days back
This allows for a roll back to any one of those checkpoints, i.e. seconds before the attack happened
Good story to tell:
Zerto helped KESA, a worker’s compensation /insurance company, recover from Ransomware attacks three times, without any disruption to the business.
#16: Pain – What about backup use cases?
Outcome – with Zerto, data protection is more than just recovery, it’s:
The ability to recover from logical failures, and not copy the corruption to the DR site
The ability to help with compliance – using our reports and easy failover testing to prove recoverability of the entire environment – no failover tests on the weekend
Enables many backup use-cases, long term retention and file level recovery
This is an opportunity to discuss how Dalmore and Eagle versions of ZVR will cover most backup use cases
Some customer testimonials:
“The product is truly too good to be true. It has bailed us out of more deleted file issues than I can count.”
“The application can be failed over to how it looked 5.7 seconds ago, or 28 seconds ago, or 4 minutes ago.
- James Crowther, Liverpool Heart & Chest Hospital
#17: Pain - How can I get to cloud or refresh to flash / hyperconverged solutions - easily and without disruption?
Outcome – With Zerto, IT Refresh is easy because we work with any underlying storage, many hypervisors and clouds. What’s unique is that you’ll be protected even as you move between or across any of these technologies.
Application consistency also means that you will not need applications to be offline when you do the refresh.
Good story to tell:
Media company (40,000+ employees) did a migration to new datacenters with Zerto - 5600 VMs migrated (8 different projects) with 93% reduction in time to setup migration and $387,000 saved on one migration alone (compared to quotes from other companies).
#18: Pain – cost of underutilized resources, heterogeneous infrastructure that does not talk to each other, disparate storage – mobilize huge number of workloads with disparate systems when consolidating
Speak to solving merger and acquisition infrastructure complexity
Outcome – With Zerto, storage agnostic software and low RTO makes consolidations easy - you can do that fast, better, cheaper
With the lowest RTOs /RPOs in the industry, we enable data center consolidations without data loss
Zerto is the only solution using consistency groups (called Virtual Protection Groups) – this enables our customers to protect applications with all of their dependencies, boot order, re-IPing, etc. for fast application recovery and migration that involves no manual configuration.
Good story to tell:
XPO logistics (one of the Fortune 500 fastest growing companies) moved from 26 datacenters down to 6 using Zerto. Saved the company money and time.
#19: Pain – expensive resource and slows down innovation, disrupts the business
Even deeper benefit: Patch on a recent database is more valuable than an old copy bubble environment
Outcome – With Zerto, you get non-disruptive testing of prod workloads in isolated environment with minimal cost or resource
Zerto customers have been able to use applications at the DR site to test software upgrades without any impact on their production environments. This is particularly valuable for high change-rate databases and other sensitive applications.
Good stories to tell:
Charter Communications – their clone / unwind process would take 24 to 36 hrs (using Netapp snaps) to get back to previous state – with Zerto 15 mins
They need to create hundreds of test copies to test various updates and features to their infrastructure. Now they can create a copy for recovery site, do any testing they need and then delete – they use the recovery site because it’s up to date and does not overload production with their tests.
Used to be hours to test and now can do this any time.
Talbots was looking to be able to migrate the Talbots.com website between corporate locations for hardware and network maintenance - Took down talbots.com while they tested the new hardware, recovered with Zerto and started taking new orders from customers within 30 minutes
#20: Pain – Migrating data is easy, but migrating applications is hard.
Outcome – With Zerto, migrations, even of high-change-rate databases is easy:
Zerto is the only solution using consistency groups (called Virtual Protection Groups) – this enables our customers to protect applications with all of their dependencies, boot order, re-IPing, etc. for fast recovery that involves no manual configuration.
Change-block tracking means that only the unique changed blocks of application data are copied to the DR site, resulting in near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO).
Good story to tell:
Maritz leveraged AWS’ on demand capacity and OPEX model by seamlessly migrating complete workloads to AWS. They relied on Zerto Virtual Replication to automate migration of workloads to AWS. Reduced DR costs by 40% by moving from CAPEX to OPEX.
#21: Pain – do you trust the cloud? You want to future-proof for cost flexibility down the road, and for peace of mind
Outcome – With Zerto moving freely between clouds is easy.
Bi-directional replication is now available for IBM cloud and Azure and soon for AWS – this allows flexibility to migrate and protect between clouds, or to choose one cloud today and a different cloud in the future.
Zerto is the trusted solution to power DRaaS for 350 clouds, and is the only solution to power DR for 80% of the clouds in the Gartner DRaaS Magic Quadrant.
Good story to tell:
Zerto customer Tencate is future-proofing their infrastructure by using Zerto to protect applications on both AWS and Azure.
#22: Pain - How can I be sure it’s all protected, even when using many clouds / environments?
Outcome - with Zerto Analytics, we provide visibility of protected environment across clouds and hypervisors.
It becomes easy to see better / worse performance and then to easily migrate applications to another datacenter or cloud based on the information.
Good story to tell:
KESA, and insurance carrier in the US, moved DR testing and reporting from a full weekend with all hands on deck - to 30 minutes during regular working hours. Now they test DR once a month.
