In this slide deck we show how to implement custom Kafka Serializer for Producer. We then show how failover works configuring when broker/topic config min.insync.replicas, and Producer config acks (0, 1, -1, none, leader, all). Then tutorial show how to implement Kafka producer batching and compression. Then use Producer metrics API to see how batching and compression improves throughput. Then this tutorial covers using retires and timeouts, and tested that it works. It explains how the setup of max inflight messages and retry back off work and when to use and not use inflight messaging. It goes on to who how to implement a ProducerInterceptor. Then lastly, it shows how to implement a custom Kafka partitioner to implement a priority queue for important records. Through many of the step by step examples, this tutorial shows how to use some of the Kafka tools to do replication verification, and inspect the topic partition leadership status.

Migrating 3000 users and 1100 applications from Lotus Notes to Office 365Arno Flapper

A large international customer decided to move into Microsoft Office 365. Their challenge is to migrate 3000+ users, 1100 applications and 100 Tb of file share data located in 50 locations and datacenters across Europe. With this migration all datacenters must be replaced by a central datacenter in The Netherlands using Office 365 and Azure within months. And we did it! A challenging project and a perfect showcase to demonstrate the do’s and don’ts when migrating to the several components of Office 365, i.e. Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business at the speed of light. In this session we will demonstrate how we: - Analyzed the on-premises installations - Cleaned up the obsolete users and data - Prepared the Office 365-tenant to host 3000 users and over 30 domains - Set-up the AD FS-infrastructure in Windows Azure - Migrated 3000 users, their mail domains and aliases - Migrated the file shares to OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online - Migrated the applications to SharePoint Online and Azure - The PowerShell workarounds we used to fix several incompatibility issues between Office 365 and the on-premises installations…and what not to do.

A big part of what the controller does is to maintain the consistency of the replicas and determine which replica can be used to serve the clients, especially during individual broker failure. Jun Rao outlines the main data flow in the controller—in particular, when a broker fails, how the controller automatically promotes another replica as the leader to serve the clients, and when a broker is started, how the controller resumes the replication pipeline in the restarted broker. Jun then describes recent improvements to the controller that allow it to handle certain edge cases correctly and increase its performance, which allows for more partitions in a Kafka cluster.

Using Queryable State for Fun and ProfitFlink Forward

Flink Forward San Francisco 2022. A particular feature in our system relies on a streaming 90-minute trailing window of 1-minute samples - implemented as a lookaside cache - to speed up a particular query, allowing our customers to rapidly see an overview of their estate. Across our entire customer base, there is a substantial amount of data flowing into this cache - ~1,000,000 entries/second, with the entire cache requiring ~600GB of RAM. The current implementation is simplistic but expensive. In this talk I describe a replacement implementation as a stateful streaming Flink application leveraging Queryable State. This Flink application reduces the net cost by ~90%. In this session, the implementation is described in detail, including windowing considerations, a sliding-window state buffer that avoids the sliding window replication penalty, and a comparison of queryable state and Redis queries. In cloud computing environments, VMs require fast access to resources like storage and networking. The hardware that the VMs access is implemented in software and/or by passing through a dedicated hardware device. Software-based solutions consume extra CPU cycles, thus resulting in poor performance. Also, these require to expose a device-model to the guest, thus increasing the attack surface. Conversely, hardware passthrough provides better performance and security but can be expensive in terms of the number of physical resources, since each device is dedicated to a single VM. This talk focuses on how Vates is working on sharing hardware resources among VMs by relying on dedicated processors named Data Processing Units (DPU).
