There are many tools and possibilities available in the Icinga monitoring ecosystem. Setup Icinga 2 within a distributed architecture, put Icinga Web 2 on top and visualise alerts. Further you’ve already setup your preferred graphing solution (Graphite, InfluxDB, etc.) and Grafana greets you with a shiny metrics dashboard. Log events are processed and Elastic Stack or Graylog add more possibilities to correlate them with monitoring alerts. Having so many tools requires you to know how to connect them, or simply integrate an existing data source or frontend into your all-in-one user dashboard. Be it Graphs in your detail view, additional log events on a critical service view or yet a global map for location based alerts. Maybe you’ll also want to provide as much details in your notifications as possible, think of fancy Grafana graphs. This talk dives into existing and possible integrations, and explains why you sometimes just write your own integration. Carsten is the author of the Icinga Web 2 Grafana module while Michael focusses on Dashing and log processing. We’ll catch up with war stories (“meh, nothing exists”) to hero stories (“hooray, users love my integration”) and hope to motivate everyone out there doing the same. We will continue with practical development on Friday during the OSMC hackathon.

Building microservices for the Cloud is easy, right?... Perhaps, but if you want to build effective and reliable services that not only work correctly within the Cloud, but also take advantage of running within this unique environment, then you might be in for a surprise. This talk will introduce lessons learnt over the past several years of designing and implementing successful Cloud-based Java applications which we have codified into our Cloud development ‘DHARMA' principles; Documented (just enough); Highly cohesive / lowly coupled (all the way down); Automated from commit to cloud; Resource aware; Monitored thoroughly; and Antifragile. We will look at these lessons from both a theoretic and practical perspective using several real-world case studies involving a move from monolithic applications deployed into a data center on a 'big bang' schedule, to a platform of JVM-based loosely-coupled components, all being continuously deployed into the Cloud. Topics discussed will include API contracts and documentation, architecture, build and deployment pipelines, Cloud fabric properties, monitoring in a distributed environment, and fault-tolerant design patterns. This presentation was delivered at muCon 2015 on 27/11/14, the microservice conference. The bulk of the conversation will focus on the open source software that can be used to build compute clouds (infrastructure-as-a-service) and the complimentary open source management tools that can be combined to automate the management of cloud computing environments. The session will appeal to anyone who has a good grasp of traditional data center infrastructure but is struggling with the benefits and migration path to a cloud computing environment. - The company started with a data analytics tool called ActivePivot but wanted to build a tool to analyze social media, starting with a NoSQL engine but having performance issues, leading them to Elasticsearch. - While Elasticsearch had good performance, scalability, and analytics capabilities, it did not meet their requirements due to high memory usage and lack of multi-field and metric aggregations. - They built their own analytics plugin for Elasticsearch to add these capabilities, using it to build their Focusmatic product for social media analysis and later their Logmatic product for log analysis.

La distribuzione è uno dei passaggi difficili che ogni sviluppatore di software si trova ad affrontare, nella sua vita di programmatore. Solitamente l'approccio consigliato quando si deve consegnare un nuovo progetto web è quello di scrivere i propri strumenti che ti permettono di mantenere sincronizzati i dati nei vari ambienti e di eseguire deployment automatici in produzione. Ma chi si occupa di mantenerli in buono stato? Bene, ecco che arriva la squadra di DevOps, pronta a collaborare per fare in modo che le tue procedure automatiche funzionino alla perfezione ad ogni rilascio.

When you have to deliver a new project, new features or changes that fix some bugs, you can handle it manually (no thanks) or write your own tools to automatically push everything into the Stage or Production environment. The second choice is better of course because allow the developers to deploy the code with a push of a button; but, who manage and keep update this toolset? Well, here it comes the DevOps team, which is nothing more than a slice of your developers team shifted from your core business to system administration. So you have to spend time and money to something you never done before and whose responsibility is it when something goes wrong? The answers are always: “I don’t have the production datas in my environment” or “The production machine has a different configuration”. In this talk I will introduce Platform.sh, how we use it in our projects and the advantages we have found.
