Performance limitations of a text search application running in cloud
instances
Abstract:
This article analyzes the performance of MySQL in clouds based on commodity
hardware in order to identify the bottlenecks in the execution of series of scripts
developed on the SQL standard. The developed scripts were designed in order to
perform text search in a considerable amount of records. Two types of platforms
were employed: a physical machine that serves as host and an instance within
a cloud infrastructure. The results show that the intensive use of a relational
database presents a greater loss of performance in a cloud instance due
limitations in the primary storage system that was employed in
the cloud infrastructure.

This document outlines the components and architecture of a big data e-commerce project using MongoDB, Amazon Elasticsearch Service, Redis Cache, CloudFront CDN, Node.js, and deployment on Heroku. Product data was scraped from Amazon.com using a web scraper and stored in MongoDB along with user profiles and orders from the website. Elasticsearch was used to implement search functionality and Kibana to create indexes. Redis Cache provided high throughput caching. Node.js developed the front-end application connected to the databases and caches. CloudFront provided caching of static content. The application was deployed on Heroku for instant deployment and scaling.

Alluxio 2.1.0 includes preview components to integrate SQL engines like Presto with Alluxio's unified metadata catalog and caching. A demo showed Presto queries against a TPCDS dataset on S3 running over 3x faster when using Alluxio's transformations to coalesce and optimize the data format from CSV to Parquet and leverage Alluxio's caching. Future work may include additional connectors, formats, DDL/DML support and client APIs. Feedback from the user community is important to help guide the project.
