They have millions of users generating billions of interactions and events per day. These massive streams of complex events can be processed and reacted upon to e.g. offer new products, next best actions, communicate to users or detect frauds, and quicker we can do it, the higher value we can generate. Our presentation will be based on our recent experience in building a real-time data analytics platform for telco events. This platform has been jointly built by GetInData and Kcell - the leading telco in Kazakhstan - in just a few months and it currently runs in production at the scale of 10M subscribers and 160K events per second on a still small cluster. It's used as a backbone for personalized marketing campaigns, detecting frauds, cross-sell & up-sell by following the behavior of millions of users in real-time and reacting to it instantly. We will share how we build such platform using current best of breed open-source projects like Flink, Kafka, and Nifi. We won't skimp on the details how we designed and optimized our Flink applications for high load and performance. We will also describe challenges that we faced during development and try to provide some tips what one should pay attention to when developing similar solutions, not only for telco, but also for banks, e-commerce, IoT and other industries.

At the beginning of 2019, Chris Nuland and team were tasked with migrating a large mesosphere DC/OS cluster with hundreds of running containers to Kubernetes for a large fortune 100 healthcare company. One of the key challenges with this migration was the need to finish it within a 7 month timeframe to allow the sunsetting of DC/OS before the cluster’s end of life. In conjunction with this migration, there was also the need to containerize a couple hundred applications and deploy them into the newly built cluster. These tasks were completed in the desired time frame using a variety of migration and onboarding techniques, including the use of a few migration tools, like pathfinder, that would eventually be part of the Konveyor suite of applications.
This presentation will go over many of the challenges of that migration, how certain tooling aided in the process, and how the process would look differently now given many of the migration tooling advantages found in the Konveyor suite of applications.

Axon is a free and open source Java framework for writing Java applications following DDD, event sourcing, and CQRS principles. While especially useful in a microservices context, Axon provides great value in building structured monoliths that can be broken down into microservices when needed.
Axon Server is a messaging platform specifically built to support distributed Axon applications. One of its key benefits is storing events published by Axon applications. In not so rare cases, the number of these events is over millions, even billions. Availability of Axon Server plays a significant role in the product portfolio. To keep event replication reliable we chose RAFT protocol for consensus implementation of our clustering features.
In short, consensus involves multiple servers agreeing on values. Once they reach a decision on a value, that decision is final. Typical consensus algorithms make progress when any majority of their servers is available; for example, a cluster of 5 servers can continue to operate even if 2 servers fail. If more servers fail, they stop making progress (but will never return an incorrect result).
Join this talk to learn why we chose RAFT; what were our findings during the design, the implementation, and testing phase; and what does it mean to replicate an event store holding billions of events!

So Kanban was implemented subtly using a project management tool to visualize work and limit work-in-progress without calling it Kanban. This approach proved successful as the first module completed 40% ahead of schedule, convincing others to adopt the approach. The goal of Lyft is to “Improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation”. Our product is fundamentally real-time and building a reliable platform that consumes and processes massive amounts of streaming data empowers us to achieve our mission. The advent of containers and Kubernetes has completely changed how we deploy and manage stateless services. At Lyft we have doubled down on Docker containers and Kubernetes for all the services in production. To achieve a homogenous infrastructure we decided to extend Kubernetes to manage stateful streaming services like Flink. We developed the FlinkK8sOperator which leverages Kubernetes CustomResourceDefinition to enable native management of Flink applications on Kubernetes. FlinkK8sOperator employs a state machine that transitions the application through a series of states, until a stable state is attained. Each Flink application on Kubernetes spins up a separate Flink Cluster, with its own UI, providing clear isolation for monitoring and debugging. This talk provides an overview of running Flink applications on Kubernetes using FlinkK8sOperator, showcasing the entire lifecycle of the application from creation to execution, with focus of transitions during deployments and stateful updates, concluding with a demo.
