None are without a level of human oversight: in some cases the overarching rules are set by humans, in others humans rubber-stamp opaque outcomes of unfathomable systems. Can we design ways for humans and AI to work together that retain essential human autonomy and responsibility, whilst also allowing AI to work to its full potential? These choices are critical as AI is increasingly part of life or death decisions, from diagnosis in healthcare ro autonomous vehicles on highways, furthermore issues of bias and privacy challenge the fairness of society overall and personal sovereignty of our own data. This talk will build on long-term work on AI & HCI and more recent work funded by EU TANGO and SoBigData++ projects.
