We use PHP to solve problems. But as software projects grow and the business needs increase, how do we manage the complexity and still produce readable and maintainable code? Domain Driven Design is a set of concepts and practices that, when applied appropriately, help us manage complexity in large scale projects. In this talk, we will explore the broad points of DDD. I’ll also share tips, patterns and lessons-learned gained from my experiences building PHP software for complicated business processes.

Hexagonal architecture is a software architecture pattern coined by Alistair Cockburn in 2005 that aims to make applications highly testable by separating the domain and application logic from the outer parts of an application like the user interface and databases. It uses port and adapter interfaces to connect the domain to the outside world which allows replacing external elements for testing purposes and makes the core logic independent of the outside tools and libraries. This decoupling brings benefits like easier testing without external elements, flexibility to change requirements and services, and emergent design.

It focuses on separating core domain functions from outside influences like databases, user interfaces, and networking to allow independent development and testing of each layer. Adapters act as intermediaries between the isolated domain/core and external components like databases or web services, allowing for flexibility in how the core interacts with these external elements. Hexagonal architecture can help with high testability, loose coupling between layers, and scalability by allowing external ports to be scaled independently.

Presented by Jan Galinski Zeebe is the new microservice orchestration engine by camunda. It allows clients to subscribe to tasks and track the completion and overall end-to-end progress of your business processes. It basically consists of a network of brokers and clients, which can be written in multiple languages. Spring Boot is a platform to create self-contained microservice on the JVM and supports integration in „cloud“ environments. Bringing those two ideas together seems like a natural fit. To simplify writing jvm-based zeebe-clients with spring boot, I set up the spring-zeebe extension, which brings the „everything just works“ feeling you expect from a spring boot starter to the zeebee world. But what if you run these spring boot clients in a cloud environment? The current broker-client architecture relies on host/port binding, a luxuary you might not have when your components are highly distributed and cannot see each other in the network. That’s where apache camel comes to the rescue. Camel is an enterprise integration solution that supports many messaging middlewares and frees your code from actually knowing if the communication will be tcp, jms, kafka or even file-based. With the camel-zeebe extension you can leverage these benefits and subscribe to arbitrary message channels to connect to the broker instead of relying on a tcp host/port connection. Challenges in Migrating Imperative Deep Learning Programs to Graph Execution:...Raffi Khatchadourian

Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code that supports symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development tends to produce DL code that is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, less error-prone imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. While hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," the challenges in applying them in the real world are largely unknown. We conduct a data-driven analysis of challenges---and resultant bugs---involved in writing reliable yet performant imperative DL code by studying 250 open-source projects, consisting of 19.7 MLOC, along with 470 and 446 manually examined code patches and bug reports, respectively. The results indicate that hybridization: (i) is prone to API misuse, (ii) can result in performance degradation---the opposite of its intention, and (iii) has limited application due to execution mode incompatibility. We put forth several recommendations, best practices, and anti-patterns for effectively hybridizing imperative DL code, potentially benefiting DL practitioners, API designers, tool developers, and educators.

There is a huge resource problem in IT, especially in the IT security industry. Therefore, you would expect people to pay attention to the existing incentives and the ones they create with their budget allocation, their awareness training, their security reports, etc. But reality paints a different picture: Bad incentives all around! We see insane security practices eating valuable time and online training annoying corporate users. But it's even worse. I've come across incentives that lure companies into creating bad products, and I've seen companies create products that incentivize their customers to waste their time. It takes people like you and me to say "NO" and stand up for real security!
