Could Virtual Threads cast away the usage of Kotlin Coroutines - DevoxxUK2025João Esperancinha
This is an updated version of the original presentation I did at the LJC in 2024 at the Couchbase offices. This version, tailored for DevoxxUK 2025, explores all of what the original one did, with some extras. How do Virtual Threads can potentially affect the development of resilient services? If you are implementing services in the JVM, odds are that you are using the Spring Framework. As the development of possibilities for the JVM continues, Spring is constantly evolving with it. This presentation was created to spark that discussion and makes us reflect about out available options so that we can do our best to make the best decisions going forward. As an extra, this presentation talks about connecting to databases with JPA or JDBC, what exactly plays in when working with Java Virtual Threads and where they are still limited, what happens with reactive services when using WebFlux alone or in combination with Java Virtual Threads and finally a quick run through Thread Pinning and why it might be irrelevant for the JDK24.

Crazy Incentives and How They Kill Security. How Do You Turn the Wheel?Christian Folini
Everybody is driven by incentives. Good incentives persuade us to do the right thing and patch our servers. Bad incentives make us eat unhealthy food and follow stupid security practices.
There is a huge resource problem in IT, especially in the IT security industry. Therefore, you would expect people to pay attention to the existing incentives and the ones they create with their budget allocation, their awareness training, their security reports, etc.
But reality paints a different picture: Bad incentives all around! We see insane security practices eating valuable time and online training annoying corporate users.
But it's even worse. I've come across incentives that lure companies into creating bad products, and I've seen companies create products that incentivize their customers to waste their time.
It takes people like you and me to say "NO" and stand up for real security!

Challenges in Migrating Imperative Deep Learning Programs to Graph Execution:...Raffi Khatchadourian
Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code that supports symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development tends to produce DL code that is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, less error-prone imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. While hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," the challenges in applying them in the real world are largely unknown. We conduct a data-driven analysis of challenges---and resultant bugs---involved in writing reliable yet performant imperative DL code by studying 250 open-source projects, consisting of 19.7 MLOC, along with 470 and 446 manually examined code patches and bug reports, respectively. The results indicate that hybridization: (i) is prone to API misuse, (ii) can result in performance degradation---the opposite of its intention, and (iii) has limited application due to execution mode incompatibility. We put forth several recommendations, best practices, and anti-patterns for effectively hybridizing imperative DL code, potentially benefiting DL practitioners, API designers, tool developers, and educators.

3. What Is Enterprise Testing & Why is it
Important?
Enterprise testing refers to the process of ensuring the quality,
performance, and security of Software systems and applications in
large-scale organizations. It goes beyond basic testing and focuses on
ensuring that applications are thoroughly tested to maintain optimal
performance, security, and user experience.
The Enterprise Testing Strategy is a collaborative effort by Project
Management, Business Analysts, and Development teams, which
outlines a comprehensive approach to reducing quality costs while
seamlessly integrating quality into product launches.
Here’s why enterprise testing is an essential investment for any
modern business:
● Ensures quality and reliability, preventing disruptions and user
frustration.
● Boosts performance and efficiency, streamlining workflows and
improving user productivity.
● Protects data and security, safeguarding sensitive information
from malicious actors.
● Enhances stakeholder confidence, building trust and confidence
across all levels.
● Drives innovation and agility, empowering organizations to adapt
and thrive in a dynamic market.
4. Why Testing Enterprise Software is More
Complex Than Traditional Applications
Testing enterprise software is significantly more complex than testing
traditional applications Because of its complex architecture, broader
user base, and critical business function it supports, any malfunction
can lead to significant operational disruptions and financial losses.
Increased Scope and Complexity:
● Enterprise software typically handles a broader range of
functionalities and integrates with various other systems making
it challenging to test thoroughly and effectively.
● Enterprise software that serves different types of users with
different roles and access levels must be tested in-depth for
each user group.
2. High Stakes and Criticality:
● Enterprise application downtime, errors or security breaches can
cause significant financial loss and reputational damage.
● Most enterprises operate in regulated industries like financial
services and healthcare, which must comply with stringent
security standards and industry regulations. This adds another
layer of complexity to the testing process.
3. Extensive Performance and Scalability Demands:
● Enterprise apps require thorough performance testing to ensure
they handle huge data loads and multiple users effectively,
ensuring responsiveness and scalability under heavy workloads.
5. ● Protecting sensitive data from unauthorized access and
breaches requires comprehensive security testing throughout the
entire development cycle.
4. Continuously Adapting to Feature Evolution
● Enterprise software frequently updates to meet changing
business needs and incorporate new functionalities.
● This constant evolution necessitates rigorous testing for rigorous
testing to address regression issues from new developments,
ensure compatibility between features and assess performance
impact.

7. Testing Phase
Challenges in Enterprise Testing
1. Lack of Clear Objectives:
A fundamental mistake lies in the absence of clear testing objectives
aligned with overall project goals. When objectives are vague, testing
becomes aimless, risking the oversight of crucial issues. To rectify
8. this, teams must define clear testing objectives, prioritize efforts,
create detailed test cases, select appropriate tools, and continuously
track progress to ensure alignment and focus.
2. Ineffective Collaboration:
Poor communication and coordination can negatively impact the
testing process. Clearly defining roles, promoting transparency,
utilizing collaboration tools, and fostering open communication
channels are essential to ensure effective teamwork, thus preventing
delays and redundant efforts.
3. Poor Test Data Management:
Mismanaged or inaccurate test data can significantly disrupt testing
outcomes. Realistic test data reflecting real-world scenarios,
automated data preparation, robust data management policies, and
implementing security measures are crucial steps to maintain accurate
and secure test data.
4. Insufficient Test Automation:
While manual testing holds importance, relying solely on it can be
time-consuming and error-prone, especially for large-scale projects.
Identifying areas for automation, establishing testing standards, and
investing in automation tools are key strategies to improve efficiency
and effectiveness in testing efforts.
