Java deployments in an enterprise environment whitepaper - xebialabsXebiaLabs
This whitepaper discusses the importance of proper deployment processes for Java applications in enterprise environments. It outlines eight common pitfalls that can undermine reliable deployment processes, such as infrastructure designs that do not consider deployment, development environments that differ from production, and the belief that full automation is not possible. To overcome these pitfalls, the whitepaper recommends adopting deployment automation solutions that provide comprehensive middleware support, best practice deployment scenarios, extensibility, scalability, cross-platform support, security, open APIs, and reporting capabilities. The whitepaper uses Air France KLM as a case study to show how deployment challenges can impact businesses. It then describes Deployit, a deployment automation product from XebiaLabs, as an example

Why Replication is Not Enough to Keep Your Business Running Axcient
While you may be familiar with multiple replication products and vendors, don’t confuse the technology of data or server replication with Disaster Recovery.
Replication is not a disaster recovery solution nor does it provide business continuity. So what exactly is replication? According to TechTarget, replication is the process of copying data from one location to another over a SAN, LAN or local WAN. This provides you with multiple up-to-date copies of your data. Look at replication as an aspect of DR/BC. Although it is a key technology in order to implement a complete DR/BC plan, it needs to be combined with data deduplication, virtual servers or even the cloud. But let’s take a step back to really understand business continuity.

Design advantages of Hadoop ETL offload with the Intel processor-powered Dell...Principled Technologies
High-level Hadoop analysis requires custom solutions to deliver the data that you need and the amount of time that even senior engineers require to create ETL jobs in a DIY hardware and software situation, can be substantial.
We found that the Dell | Cloudera | Syncsort solution was so easy to use that an entry-level employee could use it to create optimized ETL jobs after only a few days of training. And he could do it quickly—our technician, who had no previous experience using Hadoop, developed three optimized ETL jobs in 31 hours. That is less than half of the 68 hours our expert with years of Hadoop experience needed to create the same jobs using open source tools.
Using the Dell | Cloudera | Syncsort solution means that your organization can implement a Hadoop solution using employees already on your staff rather than trying to recruit expensive, difficult-to-find specialists. Not only that, but the projects can be completed in a fraction of the time. This makes the Dell | Cloudera | Syncsort solution a winning business proposition.

When considering whether to upgrade to the new Dell PowerEdge VRTX or repurpose older hardware, the advantages of new hardware are clear. Not only do you get newer hardware that is faster and is better-equipped to handle the increasing demands of today’s business applications and workloads, but you also benefit from advances that make deployment and management easier than ever.
In our labs, we compared the Dell PowerEdge VRTX with four server nodes and shared storage and networking to a similar infrastructure using four legacy tower servers, external network switches, and an external SAN. Our testing revealed the following:
· PowerEdge VRTX took 78.5 percent less time and 150 fewer steps to configure and deploy out of the box compared to the legacy solution.
· PowerEdge VRTX It took less than 1 hour to unbox and configure into a highly available VMware vSphere cluster compared to over 4 hours on the legacy solution.
· Deploying the Dell PowerEdge VRTX used just a single management tool, the integrated Chassis Management Controller, whereas the tower solution required six separate management tools.
Choosing such a complete solution during your next server refresh can simplify infrastructure setup and configuration, boost performance through built-in high availability features, and potentially save your organization space and operating costs over the life of the hardware.
Improve security, sustainability, and administrator efficiency with the Dell ...Principled Technologies
Anytime you make a hardware purchase, you’re also getting the portfolio of management tools the hardware vendor offers to manage and monitor your infrastructure. Specifications are important, but so is end-to-end security, meeting sustainability goals, and the ability to streamline administrator tasks. In our data center, we compared the features and capabilities of server management tools from Dell and HPE, comparing iDRAC9 against iLO 6 for embedded server management and OME against OneView for one-to-many device and console management and monitoring.
In the areas of security, sustainability, and management/monitoring features, we found that Dell server management tools had more to offer than comparable HPE tools—giving administrators more remote management options, reducing the time to lock down systems, and offering more granular control to help meet sustainability goals. By reducing the administrator time and effort for certain routine monitoring and maintenance tasks with the Dell management portfolio, you can give your team time back to innovate and support other initiatives.
Databases power your business, so the performance of the hardware behind your databases is crucial. In our datacenter, the Dell EMC VxRail P470F with VMware vSAN handled more orders per minute, delivered higher IOPS, responded more quickly, and utilized resources more efficiently than the HPE Hyper Converged 380 with HPE StoreVirtual VSA. Plus, scaling up and tuning performance for our specific workload was considerably easier with the Dell EMC VxRail solution than the HPE solution. These differences translate to real-world benefits. With the Dell EMC VxRail solution, you can achieve shorter wait times for customers and staff, which could increase sales and innovation at your company; reduce work for your IT staff, so they can spend more time on other critical tasks; and save space, potentially helping you delay capital expenditures. To find out more about the Dell EMC VxRail P470F, visit DellEMC.com/VxRail.
Continuing to run a legacy infrastructure may be possible, but it isn’t optimal—not when new technologies like the Dell and Nutanix solution are available. By upgrading to this new hyperconverged infrastructure, you could do eight times the work of a legacy solution in just 6U and scale for more work by simply adding another node. What’s more, eliminating the need for centralized SAN storage means more space to grow, less hardware to manage, and the potential for lower power and cooling bills.
Take the first step on the path to an upgraded environment. Run DPACK in your own datacenter, and discover your performance requirements and potential bottlenecks. Then consider how the increased mixed workload performance from the hyperconverged, Intel processor-powered Dell and Nutanix solution could help your business thrive.
IT admins can spend considerable time managing employee notebooks. The Dell Client Integration Pack 3.1 for Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager 2012 can greatly streamline the management process and allow admins to remotely perform management tasks under a much broader range of conditions.
In our labs at Principled Technologies, we performed a series of remote management tasks on Dell Latitude 7240 notebooks managed with DCIP and on Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks managed only through SCCM. Executing these tasks on a single system with DCIP was quicker and simpler than doing so with only SCCM. The time savings was even more pronounced when we performed the scenarios on two systems because DCIP lets you apply the same changes to multiple systems without taking any additional time. For an organization with large numbers of notebook systems, the economies of scale that DCIP provides would translate to the greatest savings.
Microsoft System Center virtual environment comparison: Dell PowerEdge server...Principled Technologies
When repetitive and admin-intensive management tasks are quicker and easier to complete, that’s a win for your datacenter and IT administrators. We found that using Dell Lifecycle Controller Integration for SCVMM took 74.6 percent less time to complete four key server management use cases on a single server, compared to performing the same use cases with HP OneView for System Center. When managing many servers, data extrapolated to 100 servers from testing on a second server shows the Dell solution would take 95.8 percent fewer steps and 96.5 percent less time than the HP solution. Dell Lifecycle Controller Integration for Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager also enabled IT admins to perform all of the server management operations through a single console—and staged firmware updates without necessitating a server power-down. Easier to use and less time-intensive, the results of our testing showed that the DLCI for SCVMM and Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager can be a more efficient and effective combination for your virtualized datacenter.

Systems management savings with Dell OpenManage on 13G Dell PowerEdge servers Principled Technologies
Administrators can spend their time doing routine tasks such as firmware updates, or they can spend their time on other initiatives to make your data center and your business more successful. Older servers keep admins focused on routine tasks instead of innovation because they just don’t have the capabilities to streamline management in a meaningful way to lessen the burden of routine management tasks.
In our hands-on tests, we found that Dell PowerEdge R730 servers with Dell OpenManage dramatically reduced the time it took to deploy, update, monitor, and maintain servers compared to completing the tasks manually on older systems. We estimate that you could save as much as 91.3 percent of administrator time—nearly 800 hours—over two years for a 200-server deployment.
Don’t let your older servers continue to be a time sink for administrators. By upgrading to new Dell PowerEdge R730 servers with new systems management features to handle routine tasks, you can potentially redirect those resources to innovation in other areas.

On-premises AI approaches: The advantages of a turnkey solution, HPE Private ...Principled Technologies
In this paper, we have examined the considerations around public cloud versus on-premises for AI, and then contrasted three on-premises approaches available to buyers today: build-your-own, reference architecture + services, and turnkey.
On-premises solutions are a strong option worth considering for deploying your AI workloads, especially if you want complete control over sensitive data. Compared to the public cloud, an on-premises solution grants greater control over data protection and location, with the potential to increase the security and the performance of your AI applications.
Many organizations, however, also want to give their data services teams a more complete, cloud-like experience while maintaining this security and control. While a validated reference architecture + services approach such as Dell AI Factory simplifies deployment by offering validated components, it leaves management, integration, and orchestration to the customer, that company’s services group, or a third party. In contrast, the turnkey HPE Private Cloud AI provides a pre-validated stack with hardware and AI toolsets, integrated data services software, and a cloud delivery model for administrators, data engineers, and data scientists—all of which lets organizations hit the ground running. It combines ease of procurement, setup, and management with a rich selection of out-of-box AI software and data tools, while providing the control and security of an on-premises deployment. For organizations seeking an on-premise AI implementation that comes with a built-in private-cloud experience, HPE Private Cloud AI is a stronger choice than build-your-own or reference architecture + services solutions.

Run your in-house AI chatbot on an AMD EPYC 9534 processor-powered Dell Power...Principled Technologies
Testing revealed that this server can be a great AI entry point for small organizations or departments, while upgrading to a CPU + GPU configuration could help them scale to support more users
Conclusion
GenAI is here to stay: 67 percent of business leaders in one Deloitte survey said that their organizations planned to invest further in GenAI initiatives,10 and GenAI chatbots are an interesting possibility for companies of all sizes. While larger companies with dozens or hundreds of users probably will opt for solutions involving GPUs, small and medium businesses and groups within larger organizations can enjoy the benefits of GenAI using a server with just a CPU—while retaining the option of upgrading to a GPU when and if the need arises.
To demonstrate this, we tested two configurations of single-socket Dell PowerEdge R6615 servers for an in-house GenAI chatbot use case. The configuration with only a 64-core AMD EPYC 9534 processor supported nine simultaneous users with a response time threshold of 5 seconds and a response time threshold percentage of 95. When we added an NVIDIA L4 GPU, this server was able to support 23 simultaneous users. (Because a typical user is likely to engage with the chatbot for only part of their workday, these configurations are likely to support even larger numbers of effective users.)
These results demonstrate that the Dell PowerEdge R6615 server powered by a 64-core AMD EPYC 9534 processor is a strong choice for small and medium organizations and departments in enterprises who want to develop in-house GenAI chatbots at an affordable price point. When the number of likely simultaneous users is in the single digits, the CPU-only configuration of this server provides a good user experience. As the number of users grows, companies can easily scale the server’s capabilities by adding a GPU and support more than twice as many users.

Challenges in Migrating Imperative Deep Learning Programs to Graph Execution:...Raffi Khatchadourian
Efficiency is essential to support responsiveness w.r.t. ever-growing datasets, especially for Deep Learning (DL) systems. DL frameworks have traditionally embraced deferred execution-style DL code that supports symbolic, graph-based Deep Neural Network (DNN) computation. While scalable, such development tends to produce DL code that is error-prone, non-intuitive, and difficult to debug. Consequently, more natural, less error-prone imperative DL frameworks encouraging eager execution have emerged at the expense of run-time performance. While hybrid approaches aim for the "best of both worlds," the challenges in applying them in the real world are largely unknown. We conduct a data-driven analysis of challenges---and resultant bugs---involved in writing reliable yet performant imperative DL code by studying 250 open-source projects, consisting of 19.7 MLOC, along with 470 and 446 manually examined code patches and bug reports, respectively. The results indicate that hybridization: (i) is prone to API misuse, (ii) can result in performance degradation---the opposite of its intention, and (iii) has limited application due to execution mode incompatibility. We put forth several recommendations, best practices, and anti-patterns for effectively hybridizing imperative DL code, potentially benefiting DL practitioners, API designers, tool developers, and educators.

DevOpsDays SLC - Platform Engineers are Product Managers.pptxJustin Reock
Platform Engineers are Product Managers: 10x Your Developer Experience
Discover how adopting this mindset can transform your platform engineering efforts into a high-impact, developer-centric initiative that empowers your teams and drives organizational success.
Platform engineering has emerged as a critical function that serves as the backbone for engineering teams, providing the tools and capabilities necessary to accelerate delivery. But to truly maximize their impact, platform engineers should embrace a product management mindset. When thinking like product managers, platform engineers better understand their internal customers' needs, prioritize features, and deliver a seamless developer experience that can 10x an engineering team’s productivity.
In this session, Justin Reock, Deputy CTO at DX (getdx.com), will demonstrate that platform engineers are, in fact, product managers for their internal developer customers. By treating the platform as an internally delivered product, and holding it to the same standard and rollout as any product, teams significantly accelerate the successful adoption of developer experience and platform engineering initiatives.

Be production-ready sooner by using ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise
1. Be production-ready sooner by using
ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise
Dell EMC ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise services deployed
and configured new storage resources and data protection
appliances faster than an in‑house administrator
In modern business, data is the most valuable asset you possess. Data will
continue to grow rapidly for the foreseeable future, with the collective sum of the
world’s data potentially quintupling by 2025.1
Storing, protecting, and using that
data should be high priority items for any organization. How quickly you can add
new storage, data protection, servers, and networking to your data center affects
how fast you can monetize that data and how much you can keep your staff
focused on running the business.
IT teams deploying new hardware face many challenges, including spending
too much time researching best practices or planning deployment. For Dell
EMC™
storage arrays, Integrated Data Protection Appliances (IDPA), and servers,
you can speed deployment and help your administrators by choosing to use
ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise services.
Because ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise engineers deliver product-specific
expertise, reliable processes, and depth of knowledge in best practices, Dell
EMC-certified engineers installed and configured Dell EMC Unity™
storage
and an IDPA solution in our data center at Principled Technologies faster than
an in-house resource. Not only would your organization benefit from getting
production-ready storage sooner, but your administrators can spend time
focusing on other key tasks during the deployment, such as working with other
teams to plan for an application migration.
Adding new resources to your data center is necessary to keep up with the
demands of data growth. This report explains how you can get Dell EMC storage
and data protection quickly and make your administrators’ lives easier and
accelerate time to value.

Less time is better
Need more data center resources? No problem, you can still save time.
We know that no one solution is right for all organizations. Sometimes organizations need more compute
resources to run critical applications and to meet certain service level agreement (SLA) demands. Based on one
of our previous studies, ProDeploy Plus could save time on server and networking configuration alone as part of a
full deployment.2
In the previous study, a Dell EMC-certified engineer configured four Dell EMC PowerEdge™ servers and four
networking switches in 56 percent less time than an in-house administrator. The chart below compares the
configuration times. Configuration includes tasks such as verifying server health, installing the operating system or
hypervisor, running updates, and configuring top of rack (TOR) and fibre channel switches.
This report shows that ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise
can speed and ease Unity storage and IDPA
deployment and configuration to a pre-existing
server and network environment. If you want to add
Dell EMC servers and switches to your Unity and
IDPA solution, you could see similar time savings by
using ProDeploy Plus.3
Cut down on IT staff involvement during deployment
In our data center, we asked three ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise certified engineers from Dell Technologies
Services to deploy the same Dell EMC Unity storage and IDPA solution that our in-house resource deployed. The
advantage is simple for administrators: they spend less time involved in storage and IDPA deployment and use
time more efficiently when their organization leverages ProDeploy Plus. With the time they saved on planning
and executing deployment, organizations can then speed up other critical IT projects. In addition, ProDeploy
Plus for Enterprise can reduce storage and IDPA deployment time overall, allowing organizations to modernize
their infrastructure faster and more quickly monetize important data.
With ProDeploy Plus, Dell EMC handled the bulk of the load from planning logistics through the final stages
of the IDPA deployment. This allowed our in-house administrator, who worked with the Dell EMC-certified
engineers, to have fewer schedule constraints during many stages.
Without ProDeploy Plus, our in-house administrator spent nearly 20 more hours on the deployment. Comparing
the two overall deployment times from planning to completion, using ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise reduced our
administrator’s time commitment by 74 percent. Your IT team could apply the time savings from using ProDeploy
Plus for Enterprise to strategic data center initiatives that boost your business’s value.
In-house hands-on admin time with ProDeploy Plus
includes planning, learning & design time, Dell EMC
Unity configuration time, and IDPA configuration
time. It excludes hardware setup time, as ProDeploy
Plus for Enterprise engineers completed this without
requiring in-house admin assistance or time.

3. Streamline deployment planning with a
Dell EMC project manager
Carefully planning storage deployment helps organizations meet
their current demands while potentially creating room for growth.
But planning can be time consuming and complicated. Project
managers must consider internal processes, gather and read
supporting documentation, and acquire proper toolsets. Failure
to validate compatibility or power and connectivity requirements,
determine site readiness, and review best practices before
deployment can cause serious delays.
Choosing ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise to deploy your Dell EMC
storage and backup can ease these planning stage burdens on
your organization. Dell EMC assigns a dedicated, experienced
team (including a project manager and engineer) to guide you
through the deployment planning and handle the physical
installation and software configuration. In our experience, the
Dell EMC project manager who deployed our solution gathered
and documented the project requirements and helped an in-
house administrator develop a detailed project roadmap and
implementation plan, highlighting critical path items and best
practices. This allowed the deployment to move forward with little
involvement from us. We used some of this time to arrange for the
Dell EMC-certified engineer’s arrival to complete the deployment.

4. Deployments in detail: ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise vs.
an in-house administrator
Over the course of three business days, the Dell EMC-certified engineers from ProDeploy Plus for
Enterprise services spent 9 hours and 55 minutes installing and configuring the Dell EMC Unity
storage and IDPA solution. Without ProDeploy Plus, we spent 29 hours and 53 minutes installing
and configuring the solution over eight business days. Our in-house resource spent at least 8
hours a day working on the deployment, but a typical administrator might only be able to spend
3 to 4 hours of their schedule each day. This could seriously delay prepping the solution for a
production‑ready workload.
The table below breaks down the total time (in hours and minutes) spent on each stage of installation
and configuration. Highlights include the following:
• Without ProDeploy Plus, an in-house administrator spent over 16 hours (or two full
business days) designing the topology and reading administrator guides and installation
material for the Dell EMC Unity 300 and 350F arrays and the IDPA DP4400. He was
generally familiar with enterprise data center technology but not familiar with these
specific arrays and appliance, so he needed to rely on documentation for guidance.
• Configuring the IDPA with ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise saved over 6 hours. It took the
Dell EMC engineer slightly over 3 hours, but it took an in-house administrator more than
a full business day.
• Planning for the solution with ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise saved a sizable chunk of
time—over 14 hours (85 percent less time). The advantage with ProDeploy Plus for
Enterprise can be attributed to the project manager’s familiarity with the solution.

5. Conclusion
Choosing ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise to install and configure new Dell EMC storage resources, data protection
appliances, servers, and networking appliances means your organization can modernize your IT infrastructure
quickly while your in-house administrators focus on empowering your data-driven business. In our data center:
• Installing and configuring a Dell EMC Unity storage and IDPA solution with ProDeploy Plus for Enterprise
took 74 percent less in-house administrator time.
• The three Dell EMC-certified engineers needed not quite 10 hours over three business days to deploy the
Dell EMC solution.
• Without ProDeploy Plus, it took more than 29 hours over eight business days for an in-house administrator to
install and configure the same solution.
• The Dell EMC-certified engineers installed and configured the Dell EMC Unity storage and IDPA solution
three times as fast, saving almost 20 hours and allowing an in-house administrator to focus on organizational
demands and other strategic initiatives.
With ProDeploy Plus, your organization can realize a faster, more efficient data center resources deployment with
minimal impact on your in-house IT staff.
