Why take interest in Apache Spark? Apache Spark promise being up to 100x faster than Hadoop MapReduce in certain scenarios. It provide comprehensible programming model (familiar to everyone who is used to functional programming) and vast ecosystem of tools.
In my talk I will try to reveal secrets of Apache Spark for the very beginners.
We will do first quick introduction to the set of problems commonly known as BigData: what they try to solve, what are their obstacles and challenges and how those can be addressed. We will quickly take a pick on MapReduce: theory and implementation. We will then move to Apache Spark. We will see what was the main factor that drove its creators to introduce yet another large-scala processing engine. We will see how it works, what are its main advantages. Presentation will be mix of slides and code examples.

Apache Spark is an open source project - Hadoop-compatible computing engine that makes big data analysis drastically faster, through in-memory computing, and simpler to write, through easy APIs in Java, Scala and Python. This project was born as part of a PHD work in UC Berkley's AMPLab (part of the BDAS - pronounced "Bad Ass") and turned into an incubating Apache project with more active contributors than Hadoop. Surprisingly, Yahoo! are one of the biggest contributors to the project and already have large production clusters of Spark on YARN.
Spark can run either standalone cluster, or using either Apache mesos and ZooKeeper or YARN and can run side by side with Hadoop/Hive on the same data.
One of the biggest benefits of Spark is that the API is very simple and the same analytics code can be used for both streaming data and offline data processing.

The history of a.s.r. begins 1720 in “Stad Rotterdam”, which as the oldest insurance company on the European continent was specialized in insuring ocean-going vessels — not a surprising choice in a port city like Rotterdam. Today, a.s.r. is a major Dutch insurance group based in Utrecht.
Nelleke Smits is part of the Analytics lab in the Digital Innovation team. Because a.s.r. is a decentralized organization, she worked together with different business units for her process mining projects in the Medical Report, Complaints, and Life Product Expiration areas. During these projects, she realized that different organizational approaches are needed for different situations.
For example, in some situations, a report with recommendations can be created by the process mining analyst after an intake and a few interactions with the business unit. In other situations, interactive process mining workshops are necessary to align all the stakeholders. And there are also situations, where the process mining analysis can be carried out by analysts in the business unit themselves in a continuous manner. Nelleke shares her criteria to determine when which approach is most suitable.
