We’re excited to co-host Node Climate's FOAK Tales event with an incredible group of climate innovators at #SFClimateWeek! Hope to see many of you there!
Climate Tech Ecosystem Builder | CEO at JF Strategies | Program Director at Newlab | Interim Director at OWIH | Founding Partner at Node
Climate tech innovation has the ability to make planetary scale impact, but only if we figure out how to scale, deploy, and support these novel technologies. This is especially true for novel hardware and infrastructure solutions, which are significantly harder to build, fund, and operate than their software brethren. Luckily, a group of forward thinking leaders from across industries are coming together to develop new tools, helping climate tech companies get past the first-of-a-kind (#FOAK) commercial deployment challenge. Next week, at #SFClimateWeek, we're bringing several of these leaders together for FOAK Tales, a series of lightning talks where each organization will share how they're closing the scale gap for climate projects. This event is part of a series of ecosystem building initiatives Deanna Zhang and I have been rolling out at Node Climate. Join us! Our co-hosts and speakers include: Trellis Climate New Energy Risk Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati Khasma Capital Climate Finance Solutions Black & Veatch Elemental Impact Lara Pierpoint Emily Lewis O'Brien Richard Riley Thomas Dickson Joel Armin-Hoiland Ashlynn Horras, P.E. "At the end of the day, for very good reasons, philanthropists want to invest in projects and ideas that are likely to be successful and go forward and do the things they are meant to do." Our Managing Director, Lara Pierpoint, recently spoke with Jeva Lange at Heatmap News about the increasingly complex landscape facing climate-focused donors. We've been deepening our connections within the first-of-a-kind (FOAK) climate infrastructure ecosystem! Here's a quick round-up 👇 ✅ Lara Pierpoint joined the Berkeley Energy & Resources Collaborative (BERC) 2025 Energy Summit to speak on the panel Bridging the Gap: Financing First-of-a-Kind Energy Transition Projects alongside Andrew Yi (Builders Vision), David Yeh (Precursor), and Greg Dalton (Climate One). ✅ Lara and Lee Scott attended the ARPA-E Summit in Washington, D.C., where they connected with dozens of climate startups advancing to the FOAK project phase and explored the role of catalytic capital in accelerating these technologies. ✅ Emily Lewis O'Brien attended National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s Industrial Growth Forum and the Energy Impact Partners Industrial Decarbonization Summit in Denver, where she met with commercialization-stage startups—including companies Ebb Carbon, Nitricity, and Tandem PV—and joined the Bring-a-FOAK-Deal Dinner, hosted by Node Climate, Foley Hoag LLP, and Khasma Capital. These conversations are critical to unlocking the potential of FOAK climate solutions and bridging the financing gap for early-stage deployment. Looking forward to continuing these discussions with partners across the ecosystem! It was a special gift to be interviewed by Lara Pierpoint PhD for Latitude Media's Green Blueprint #podcast. Lara has tremendous domain expertise in clean tech innovation, investment, and commercialization and she has been in leadership roes at Trellis Climate, Excelon, and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Policy and System Analysis. Laura dug deep examining how we have been successful at Nextracker Inc. ideating, prototyping, and scaling a variety of technologies in the market which has resulted in well over 100 GW of deliveries, and as a by-product of innovation and customer service, lead market share for 9 consecutive years. We covered from startup (shout out to Alexander Au) through scale up, powering through the “valley of death”, and recent examples of creating products driven by customer requirements (Michael Alvarez, Craig Cornelius, Sheldon Kimber, Abhijeet Sathe) to help mitigate extreme weather while generating more energy for customers. And we discussed the importance of company culture and values which is the underpinning of great strategy and execution. Here's the episode: https://lnkd.in/gfYnpbsj Thank you Laura, Stephen Lacey, Anne Bailey, and Sean Marquand for having us on the program and your ongoing work in cleantech. Nice to visit my home state of Colorado earlier this week to present at the Energy Impact Partners Industrial Decarb Summit. I shared how Nitricity successfully built the capital stack for our first-of-a-kind plant with great partners (Elemental Impact, Trellis Climate) leading the way in #ImpactInvesting. With our FOAK plant, we will scale production and continue to deliver high-quality, sustainable fertilizers (with no green premiums) to local growers. 🌱🏔 Thank you to the team Energy Impact Partners for having me! #ColoradoClimateWeek

🎉 We are thrilled to support Tandem PV as they take a major step forward in advancing high-efficiency, U.S.-manufactured perovskite solar technology. With $50M in funding led by Eclipse, Tandem PV will build its first manufacturing facility, a critical first step on its scaling journey. Tandem PV’s tandem perovskite-silicon panels deliver an industry-leading 28% efficiency—projected to surpass 30% by late 2025—making them 30% more powerful than standard silicon panels. Their superior efficiency and lightweight, thin-film design reduce installation costs, helping to accelerate adoption at scale. At Trellis Climate, we focus on catalytic investments in first-of-a-kind (FOAK) climate infrastructure, bridging funding gaps to accelerate the deployment of transformative solutions. Supporting Tandem PV alongside Constellation Energy, Planetary Technologies, Uncorrelated Ventures, Tom Werner, Stifel Bank, CSC Leasing, and other investors aligns with our mission to de-risk critical climate technologies and crowd in commercial capital for long-term impact. 🚀 Read more: https://lnkd.in/d2CYtq4A #CatalyticCapital #ClimateTech #ImpactInvesting #FOAK #RenewableEnergy #SolarTech

Nitricity, a California-based startup producing organic nitrogen fertilizer from air, water, renewable energy, and recycled almond shells, has raised $10m from capital providers including Elemental Impact and Trellis Climate to build a fertilizer plant in Delhi, California. Set to become operational in 2026, the plant will produce hundreds of tons of fertilizer by 2028, with capacity already sold out through 2028 under binding offtake agreements with local organic growers of berries and leafy greens. Nitricity had previously explored a variety of approaches to extract nitrogen from air that mimic the way lightning naturally fixes nitrogen in the atmosphere. But the economics ultimately didn’t add up, CEO Nicolas Pinkowski told us. “We’ve built Jacob’s ladders powered by solar panels for nitrogen fixation. We’ve also made fertilizer with molten lithium metal. The challenge with these approaches is the cost. “So we worked with regulators and changed our technology and market segment and invented a new organic-approved fertilizer that can compete with chicken manure and fertilizers such as fish emulsions that we’re able to sell at a market price that makes sense for both farmers and Nitricity. “Recycling plant nutrients doesn’t sound as exciting as plasma, but I think there’s tremendous opportunity here.” #organics #fertilizer #agtech AgFunder 👉 Read the full story here: https://lnkd.in/g2i-uFsR
