One of the most important areas where Pinterest has been innovating over the years is youth safety and health on our platform.  Super proud of our product and engineering teams involved with our latest effort to do right by our younger users: an experimental prompt on the Pinterest platform that will encourage students who open Pinterest in class to close the app, turn off device notifications, and focus on their learning.

This year, Pinterest became the first major tech company to call for states and school districts to adopt phone-free school policies to limit the distraction of smartphones and apps in classrooms. We were crystal clear: we won’t just talk the talk, but we'll walk the walk with real actions to support those policies.  Today, I’m proud to announce Pinterest is taking important steps to follow through on that vision: - First, we are launching an experimental in-app prompt on Pinterest that will display during school hours to minors, encouraging them to close Pinterest and providing a link to pause device notifications across the phone so students can focus on class. - And second, we're implementing a $1 million partnership with the ISTE to support school districts across the country with digital citizenship and well-being programs. This comes on top of my continuing engagement with state governors, policymakers and other leaders. We have the chance to empower a bright new generation of young people to become responsible digital citizens, and I hope tech companies will join Pinterest in backing phone-free school policies and come to the table with solutions. • H. Leo K., Sr. Technical Program Manager and United States Veteran, joins the #LifeatPinterest team to share how he pivoted his career into the tech industry, reflections on valuable skills learned in the Air Force and his thoughts on returning as a Global Lead for the Vets@ Pinclusion Group. “As a veteran, I've acquired several skills that have contributed to my role as a Technical Program Manager. Firstly, leadership and team management were paramount in the military. For example, in one of my roles in the Air Force, I built and led a 15-person cross-functional team from seven distinct career fields to provide multi-faceted support for 18 construction projects. Experiences like these help to align on goals and execute large-scale programs at Pinterest.” Read Leo’s story here: https://lnkd.in/e7t58W8h

  • In March, we welcomed Professor Michael Ekstrand to speak at our Pinterest Labs Talk Series event. With so much positive feedback from our team, we asked Machine Learning Engineer II, Xumei Xi to share her thoughts on the event. Here's what Xumei said: "I gained significant insights from Professor Ekstrand about the historical context, past research efforts, and different methodologies involved in algorithmic fairness in terms of different degrees of information access. These insights broadened my perspective on this subject, giving me a more nuanced understanding of the challenges and solutions associated with algorithmic fairness in recommender systems." • Meet Aaliyah P., Technical Sourcer at Pinterest. In her role, Aaliyah recruits for our Machine Learning team! "As a long-time user, Pinterest is a dream company of mine. My favorite thing about being a recruiter is I get to help people find a job that they will love. I care deeply about providing a positive candidate experience. How can you do well in our interview process? 📌 Practice, practice, practice! It's important to feel prepared before diving into a coding round. Work with your recruiter to make sure you have the proper resources. 📌 Concise communication is key. I recommend using the STAR Method when answering questions. 📌 If you haven't used Pinterest, I'd suggest getting familiar with the product. Knowing your answer to 'Why Pinterest?' is important!"
