What an incredible event in London, packed with inspiring workshops, powerful panels, and most importantly, a room full of true warriors in the fight against fraud! 💥 An amazing fortnight in London. So great to see so many developments on a few fronts that impact RegTech and the eco-system. Our Global Ambassadors came together to meet some other RTA members in London. Thanks to GBG for hosting us and it was great some quality time together. See my previous post. Gates Foundation held a consumer protection workshop bringing in their partners to furnish their plans for the next planning cycle. So many great ideas and conversations. Thanks to Anna Wallace Global passion for stopping fraud and scams at the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) including an address by The Right Hon Lord Sir David Hanson of Flint the UK Minister for Fraud who spoke of fraud and scams and their harm on people, businesses and the threats to national security. There were so many Australians in town for this event! Thanks to Jorij Abraham and the team at GASA who hosted me. Also to RTA members Feedzai who I got to spend some time with and even recorded a podcast – coming soon! Robert Harris Iris Lo. Good to see Dodgy or Not? and FNA at the conference. Completed the week with the Bank for International Settlements – BIS Financial Crime data challenge. We saw highlighted that illicit financial flows are totalling $3trillion between 2-5% of global GDP, cross border fraud are 9 times higher than domestic, 50% of EU consumers have been impacted by fraud and scams, only 13% of UK consumers are reporting fraud and only 1% of illicit flows are intercepted and recovered. Good news is that tech is fighting back – the two days saw a number of technology companies present their solutions to solve these challenges. Congrats to RTA member FNA who participated. Great to see my old friends Maha El Dimachki Kenneth Gay Francesca Hopwood Road and Jennifer B. Lassiter. Spent some time with Financial Conduct Authority Jasmin De Freitas (née Harper) Colin Payne, a significant global RegTech investor and our peers at City of London Corporation. One week on, and I’m still thinking about the incredible insights from the Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS), hosted by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA)! I’m so grateful that I was able to join virtually, as it is the largest anti-scam event. Held in London, the summit gathered professionals from research, law enforcement, the tech sector, and the finance industry to tackle the ever-evolving threat of online scams. With 750 in-person attendees and around 700 joining virtually, it was a truly global effort to share knowledge and collaborate on solutions. Being in the Philippines, where online fraud is wreaking unimaginable havoc on an already vulnerable population, it was both eye-opening and reassuring to see experts across different fields coming together to fight this global issue. The insight-sharing and knowledge exchange were invaluable, and I left with a completely new perspective on several key issues, as well as fresh approaches for my work with BANTAYnet. The session on ‘Prevention Through Education and Technology’ was particularly relevant to my mission, especially the findings on what works (and what doesn’t) in scam prevention. One talk that stood out to me was by Becky Holmes whose session on Romance Fraud was gripping and incredibly informative. It was made even more engaging with humorous anecdotes about her own encounters with catfishers. Her insights into the three key failings of law enforcement in tackling these scams really struck a chord. As someone who frequently hears firsthand accounts from victims of online fraud, this topic is deeply important to me. I created this visual based on her talk because it so powerfully encapsulates the deceptive nature of these crimes. (BeckyHolmes, I hope I didn’t misquote you!) 😅 While the fraud landscape is constantly evolving, it was reassuring to see so many forces unifying and actively working against it. An incredible week in London 🇬🇧 🚨The week was anchored by the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA) summit that brought together over 1,400 people in-person and virtually across sectors focused on anti-scam strategies. I was honored to speak on a panel on Anti-Scam Centres, highlighting where the US is today in building out a national strategy led by The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program / Kate Griffin, and challenges and opportunities we’re facing. A big thank you to Jorij Abraham and Sheylaa Saadat and the team for all your work on the incredible event! We’re excited to formalize learnings across countries and build on the relationships we made. 💡We joined CHASM - Centre on Household Assets and Savings Management and Fair4All Finance to share with UK leaders the US experience in developing a National Financial Inclusion Strategy, which JPMorganChase is proud to be a supporter of. Rockstars Kate Griffin and Erin Borġ (Thiemann) presented on how The Aspen Institute Financial Security Program led the US cross-sector effort. 🔓We had a series of meetings with UK partners to exchange learnings on a variety of financial health topics spanning credit, workplace benefits, and fraud and scam prevention. About last week…where do I start? So many incredible moments across multiple scam prevention forums in the UK. 🇬🇧 One thing that really stood out to me is just how much the scale AND passion of the cross-sector network of scam fighters continues to grow. It’s remarkable and super encouraging to see the brilliant folks leaning into protecting consumers. I must express my deep appreciation to those fostering crucial dialogues: - Stop Scams UK orchestrated a masterful gathering of senior leaders, including a meeting with the UK Minister responsible for fraud, Sir David Hanson . Kudos to the powerhouse participants, Mark Tierney and Helen Fairfax-Wall ! - The organizers of the Global Anti-Scam Summit (GASS) in London deserve immense praise for coordinating a two-day program for over 700 in-person attendees.
