POST-participating agency within the State of California’s Department of Developmental Services.

About us

The Office of Protective Services (OPS) at the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is a POST-participating agency created to protect, serve, and perform specialized law enforcement services within the DDS community. As law enforcement professionals, OPS has the responsibility of protecting the most vulnerable individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Down syndrome, autism, and related conditions. Our POST-certified Police Officers and Detectives play a vital role in ensuring the safety of our residents and colleagues by conducting investigations, performing patrol operations, responding to emergencies and criminal incidents, managing custody operations, and enforcing California state laws. Other specialized teams and programs include K-9 operations, ATV patrol, drone operations, crisis negotiation, Honor Guard, and our Field Training Program.
