Are there 'Producer' and 'Consumer' in cooperation between container lines? If affirmative, who are they?

In terms of generating information and utilizing it, we can think about the role of producer and consumer even in container liner shipping sector when liners are under the various structure of cooperation which is inevitable for frequency and coverage in service.

What kind of activities are necessary for cooperation between container liners?

Under the circumstance of cooperation between container liners, various types of information should be exchanged for vessel operation, cargo handling, contract, and settlement. In sequence of process 'vessel schedule > application > operation > contract > settlement', various format of information are being shared between liners.

Activity by Lane/Voyage/Port/Occasion

Then when the information is being exchanged? It depends on the type of information. Mostly, on the regular basis, but an occasional basis of sharing information is also required. Although categorized activities by the various events in the '01~06' cover full range of information spectrum, limited access would be possible in accordance with the structure of cooperation between container liners.

Who is the 'Producer' and who is the 'Consumer'?

Under the cooperation structure in container liner business, there is no permanent 'Producer' nor 'Consumer'. For instance, vessel operating line is 'Producer' for ship's schedule information which needs to be shared with the booking line(s) while 'Consumer' for special cargo application which will be received from a booking line.

In this circumstance which is a container line could be a 'Producer' as well as 'Consumer' simultaneously, it is possible to expect network effect. In another word, the cooperation in container liners is practical two-sided market environment form information handling perspective.

In this reason, we are looking more opportunities of the network effects in CARA 2.0 which is aiming to invite container liners.
