CII(The IMO's Carbon Intensity Indicator)

As an important action by IMO to cut emissions from ships, from 2023, the CII (The IMO's Carbon Intensity Indicator) will take effect for trading internally( all cargo, RoPax, and cruise vessels above 5,000GT).

CII is one of the short-term measures to cut carbon intensity by IMO and will work as an efficient operation index for existing vessels. " The CII determines the annual reduction factor needed to ensure continuous improvement of the ship's operational carbon intensity within a specific rating level. The actual annual operational CII achieved (attained annual operational CII) would be required to be documented and verified against the required annual operational CII. This would enable the operational carbon intensity rating to be determined. The rating would be given on a scale - operational carbon intensity rating A, B, C, D or E.  A ship rated D for three consecutive years, or E, would have to submit a corrective action plan, to show how the required index (C or above) would be achieved. Administrations, port authorities and other stakeholders as appropriate, are encouraged to provide incentives to ships rated as A or B. "


Case Study of Vessel Operation

Suppose there is a 10,000 Teu class vessel, and it needs to sail over 4,080 miles with a planned speed of 17.0kts for 10 days. What if the vessel had started the voyage with 19.0kts and reduced speed or drift at the last moment due to the berth window situation?

As it is simulated under 'Optimum' and 'Actual' in the table, the CII (Carbon Intensity Indicator) could be de-rate from A to C in 2023 by fuel oil consumption.

* The simulation is made based on estimated fuel consumption by speed and class on a regression analysis. Therefore, the actual result is subject to change by the real consumption.


This is why the Just-In-Time PortCall is important, on the other hand.

Although the CII (Carbo Intensity Indicator) will be evaluated annually and voyage wise of operation will affect the rating, this kind of simulation and understanding would be helpful in decision making. Also, this explains how important the various efforts of promoting the Just-In-Time PortCall are not only for saving cost and better CII(Carbon Intensity Indicator) rating but also for protecting our environments.

Advanced decision and keeping ship's port call schedule under the consensus through real-time communication, more opportunity of optimal operation will be available definitely.
