During my cousin’s first military deployment he said to me, “I don’t know what I would do if I got out of the military?” As he said this to me, tears filled his eyes. Those words have been imprinted in me and I often think of what he said when I am working, volunteering, or helping my community. He’s been my inspiration to do what I can to help connect veterans with finding meaningful employment.

One of the most common ways to help people is through personal connections and networking. Those who know me think of me as this outgoing extrovert that thrives on networking functions. The reality is, I would have severe anxiety and many times have felt I did not belong at a function or networking event. Many of the networking events and interactions focused solely on titles and companies. This felt disingenuous to me and fruitless. The human element was lost.

My optimal time for relationship building is 5:00 a.m. at the gym. The gym is my happy place where I have built real relationships with people which have turned into fruitful opportunities for me and for others. At the gym, it’s not about titles or companies, we get to know the people first.

During COVID-19, we all were isolated and connecting via video chats, calls, and emails. I was going crazy! As the world slowly reopens (safely), I felt it was time to bring my passion to life. What if there was a fitness class structured to allow for genuine relationships to be built? This is how #WarriorChallenge2021 began. Through FitConX, we have partnered with Epic Fitness to launch monthly fitness events focused on bringing people together, to build confidence, camaraderie and to support our community.

FitConX and Epic Fitness are committed and passionate about helping veterans and through this monthly event, it’s the perfect environment to bridge the disconnect between veterans and civilians allowing both the opportunity grow their networks and relationships.

FitConX is not my paying job but I feel it is part of my responsibility to support local veterans and hope others feel the same. #WarriorChallenge2021 is designed to drop the titles, drop the judgement and to provide people a safe and supportive place to push themselves physically and personally.

We hope others will join us by coming to one of our events or by offering to host an event (we only need space). All profits raised go directly to USVets to support their workforce programs and mission.
