We are human, after all
We talk a lot these days about AI, automation, and data. But in all the buzz, let’s not forget one thing: we’re still human. And so are our clients, our colleagues and our partners.
I was reminded of this fact on a dreich day in Manhatten as I marched along with colleagues and friend in this years Tartan Day Parade. The march was the culmination of a tremendous week of meetings, opportunity spotting and relationship building, all done in person.
But it's not just on the streets of New York where we must engage as a human; behind every email, every Zoom call, and every Whatsapp message, there’s a person. Someone with pressure on their shoulders, ideas in their head, and goals they’re trying to hit. That doesn’t change, no matter how clever the tech gets.
Optimising human connection is the edge. It always has been.
We can’t lose sight of empathy, of actually listening, not just replying. Of showing we care, not just solving problems quickly. Whether we’re helping a founder break into a new market or advising a company on setting up in a new market, it’s not just about systems and strategy. It’s about trust. It’s about saying, “I get where you’re coming from.”
Our community at Scottish Business Network reminds me of this every day, we are after all a collection of people, no AI agents are members :) The strength of our Global Scottish Family isn’t built on profit or efficiency, instead it is built on a shared sense of identity and belonging. That’s what makes the difference in business too, people do business with people they trust.
So yes, let’s keep innovating. Let’s use AI to do more, go faster, and reach wider. But let’s not let the tech crowd out our humanity. Let's use tools to be better humans, better to each other and our planet.
Because at the end of the day, industries don’t change because of software. They change because of relationships. And those relationships only work when we remember who we are.
Still human. Still, what matters most.

A few months ago, I analysed my top five Linkedin posts to find which were the most "successful", ie, which received the most likes, comments and shares. Interestingly, each one was based on a human experience, which created an emotional reaction.

1moI love the word "dreich" and wondered what ChatGPT would make of it, and to image what a dreich day would be like. It did know the word, but went on to say, "If I didn't know the word and had to imagine it, I think the harsh sound of dreich—that drawn-out, slightly choking final consonant—already suggests something unpleasant and dragging, like the sky can't be bothered to rain properly, and neither can you. It's onomatopoeia for low spirits!"

1moThanks for sharing, Russell, as someone who has also failed spectacularly - learning to ask for help is the biggest challenge.
Huge thanks to everyone who marched with us in New York; you all did Scotland proud.
