Focus, focus, focus

Focus, focus, focus

The world is moving fast, but we, entrepreneurs, need to remain focused and not to get distracted.

We're balancing ideas, deadlines, meetings, emails, and pitches, it can become too easy to get swept away in activity without ensuring that each action is aligned with a goal.

I spent much of my career being “the busy fool” as an employee. It wasn't a bad strategy back then, but it will destroy any entrepreneurial venture.

If you’ve ever found yourself drowning in distraction or battling procrastination, you’re not alone.

Here are three things I’ve learned (and practiced) that help bring clarity, focus, and momentum to my day.

1. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝

Forget overwhelming to-do lists. Each morning, ask yourself: “What’s the one thing I can do today that will move me closer to my goal?” Then, do that first.

This creates momentum, builds confidence, and aligns your brain with your purpose. There is also a great sense of accomplishment when you complete this task.

2. 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞-𝐛𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐫𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐥𝐲

In my experience multitasking is a terrible use of my time. Our brains love deep work its what they are designed for.

Try this:

·         Block off 60-minute focus sessions in your calendar each day.

·         Switch off ALL notifications (I’ll even switch my phone off).

·         Dive into one key task and, no matter what the distraction, remain focused.

You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you give your full attention to one thing.

3. 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐲'𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐭.

This sounds arrogant, but trust me, it's true. We need you to focus on those items that only you can do, the rest should be delegated.

Your mental state drives everything. Your ability to focus is heavily affected by the world around you.

·         Curate your information diet (if you find yourself scrolling, stop; this can sap your energy)

·         Choose who you spend time with; seek radiators, not drains.

·         Start and end your day with silence, journaling, or a walk.

But don’t worry if your chosen way to focus is different from mine. How you focus is highly personal; what is important is to increase the number of minutes each day where you are focused on deep work. Improving your ability to focus will define your trajectory more than any pitch deck or funding round ever will.

So, start small. Win the morning. Own your time. And protect your mind.

The results will speak for themselves.

"The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus." — Alexander Graham Bell

I love this Russell. Starting the day with a walk can be great to identify the intentional goal, not just label it but build layers under it so what the goal is, what specifically you need to do to accomplish it, how you’re going to do it etc so by the time you finish your walk, you’ve got the focus to go and get started. Also, getting outdoors first thing gives you some vitamin D and is hugely beneficial to your health 🙂 Another thing I’d add to that is to use your goal to govern your decision making and ask yourself if what you’re about to do, eat or drink will help you accomplish your goal. If you can answer “yes” straight away, go for it but if you’re pausing then stop and go do something else. We’re all human and can easily be distracted for whatever reason but asking yourself that question is incredibly powerful and will not only help you at that time, it will help create positive habits going forward. It’s the most powerful strategy I’ve used in helping clients lose weight and it can be applied in many different situations

Thanks Russell, great advice and it’s very similar to my regimen that I’ve built from being in the Army and an HGV driver where every day needs planning with a backup of B C & D, you never know what’s going to happen, break your down to achievable goals focus each one separately and break down and repeat- lots small accomplishments builds towards the goal dream and Vizion, A wee quote “Learn from yesterday’s, mistakes, plan to improve on them today and plan for a perfect day tomorrow “

This is good advice Russell, especially with everything going on right now.
