STAT-UP's annual review 2024

STAT-UP's annual review 2024

2024 was a year full of challenges: Wars and violence, difficult political situations that put democracies around the world to the test, fake news and mistrust within the population. With all this negative news, there is a great danger that we will lose sight of the positive aspects of the year. You can find out a few facts and figures about what went well this year in our statistical review of 2024.

Let's start with our democracy. Right-wing political opinion is becoming increasingly popular. In difficult times, blame-shifting and destructive criticism are quickly at hand. But despite this, people all over Germany, regardless of their political preferences, stand together for one thing: Democracy. Hundreds of thousands of people went to the streets at the beginning of the year to raise their voices against the ever-growing right-wing extremism in our country. These protests were triggered by the revelations of the research network correctiv, which uncovered a meeting of right-wing extremists in Potsdam attended by leading AfD politicians as well as members of the so-called “Werteunion”.

One of the main topics at this meeting was the mass “remigration” of citizens with a migration background.  In January, the ARD DeutschlandTREND showed that around 72% of respondents expressed understanding for the demonstrations against right-wing extremism. These figures not only show that Germany can stick together when it matters. They show that the right-wing extremist, inhumane and democracy-threatening processes do not meet with majority approval. As a multicultural company with colleagues from around 15 different nations, we also stand together against such views.

In May, Germany celebrated another great success: 75 years of the Basic Law! The fundamental rights that are the cornerstones of our society, including freedom of opinion, freedom of the press, freedom of religion and equal rights, are enshrined in this monumental law. In a survey, 67% of respondents agreed with the statement that the Basic Law is one of the greatest achievements of the Federal Republic of Germany.

For years, we at STAT-UP have been calling for the general public to become more aware of how data and AI are handled. The first step in this direction was taken in June 2024. Driven by the rapid rise of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, Gemini and others, the EU AI Act was passed. This uniform European law is intended to regulate, among other things, that artificial intelligence used and developed in the EU is trustworthy and protects the fundamental rights of everyone. So far, only just under a third of the companies surveyed consider themselves well prepared to implement the requirements of the EU AI Act. The adoption of such a law is the first step in the right direction. We advocate strongly promoting data and AI skills in the future, starting with general education and extending to the workforce, management level and political decision-makers.

In early summer, the European Football Championship held in Germany brought people from all over Europe together. In a total of 51 games, the 24 participating teams thrilled almost 2.7 million spectators in the stadiums of the ten host cities and millions upon millions in front of the screens with an average of 2.29 goals per game! Particularly admirable was the German-Scottish friendship, which was brought to life by the preliminary round match between the two national teams.

2024 was also a very successful year for us, both from a business and a community perspective. We were able to strengthen our cohesion in several team talks, welcomed many new faces to our ranks and spent many great hours together away from the office. Be it our hiking trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, international cooking evenings or a joint visit to a Christmas market in Munich. We also had the opportunity to put our expertise to the test in a number of extremely exciting projects this year.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported us this year! We hope that 2025 will be characterized by many more positive encounters and projects.

On behalf of the management and the entire STAT-UP team, we wish you a happy and healthy new year 2025!
