Seán Ó Deoráin - Data Science Consultant at STAT-UP

🌍 Background

Seán Ó Deoráin comes from Ireland, where he studied mathematics and French for his bachelor's degree in Dublin. His Erasmus semester in France sparked a lasting friendship with a German student. Visiting Germany several times, Seán found it an ideal place to continue his studies. He's currently pursuing a master’s degree in mathematics at TUM. Two friends, previous interns at STAT-UP, highly recommended us—prompting Seán to join our team!

🌲 Outside the Office Seán fully enjoys Munich’s vibrant surroundings. He loves jogging through Englischer Garten and exploring Bavaria’s stunning lakes and mountains. City breaks, outdoor adventures, and active weekends keep him energized and inspired.

👨💻 Daily Job

In his day-to-day work, Seán:

• Develops interactive web apps and builds efficient data pipelines.
• Analyzes survey data to identify structural differences between participant groups.
• Prepares data, categorizes responses, and applies statistical tests.

📊 Current Tools and Projects

Seán is experiencing statistical computing in R for the first time through one of his projects. His responsibilities include:

• Handling extensive missing data using advanced imputation techniques in R.
• Applying KL divergence methods to identify critical differences between the survey’s full and partial responders.
• Creating insightful visualizations, graphs, and comprehensive reports based on statistical findings.

🚧 Challenges and Growth

Managing large numbers of missing responses in survey data is one of the challenges, Seán had to face during his projects at STAT-UP. He quickly adapted, mastering KL divergence and sophisticated imputation methods in R—turning obstacles into valuable learning experiences.
