Save time: follow instructions efficiently

Too many scholarship and grant applications are rejected because the instructions weren’t followed. Every detail matters; missing even one small formatting detail could get your application rejected.

Tip #1: Read everything before you write anything.

I know, these instructions can be long—longer than long. Many applicants simply don’t have time to read through all of the instructions carefully and repeatedly enough to catch every small detail. But it is necessary.

Tip #2: Try this system for following detailed instructions efficiently.

  1. Copy and paste the instructions into a blank document.
  2. Add a page break before each question or section.
  3. Convert long paragraphs into point form, so it’s easier to see each detail separately.
  4. Don’t delete a single word.
  5. Change the font colour of the instructions to pink.
  6. Write and edit your proposal in black. Try one of these ideas to help you write faster.
  7. As you complete sections or tasks, change the font colour of those instructions to grey. Instructions for incomplete sections or tasks stand out in colour.
  8. Once all of your answers are ready, remove all of the instructions from the proposal.

Please share your strategies for following complicated instructions below. I'm always eager to learn more ideas!
