My Introvert quirks and why I love them
For many years I thought of my introversion or my quiet nature as something that had to be fixed or hidden. Having been told that I had to ‘open up’ or ‘speak up’ far too many times I was always unsure of being myself each time I connected with people. It was only a few years ago that I truly connected with my Introverted nature and realized the many gifts that it had for me. And I have also discovered some things about myself that I can chuckle over because only an introvert would get them.
Here are a few of my quirks that may be worthy of a laugh :
1. I sometimes skip phone calls. I have to take a moment to decide before I pick up the phone when it rings. Honestly, I have to prepare myself before speaking with someone even if it is over the phone, so when I do get unexpected calls I would have to think about the urgency /priority/relationship with caller etc. I can though have an entire conversation over text .
2. I have pretended to be speaking on the phone to avoid a conversation. I know many people who have done this so I know I am not the only one. And that is a huge sigh of relief because each time I did this I would feel guilty. Also for me it would be usually at one of those big event parties or gatherings where I would do anything to avoid small talk.
3. I do blank out during small talk. I am not even sure how I do this because it is very instinctive but I know I do drift away , mentally. I will need someone to tell me someday if my eyes glaze out too….but I am that kid in the class that daydreamed a LOT.
4. I live in my head. A lot. Yes a LOT. I think, plan ,reflect and introspect . I am always telling my husband that 99% of what I say or do has been thought through about for awhile so its hardly ever ‘spur of the moment’.
5. I have avoided acquaintances at the grocery store. Sorry!!!
6. I love to talk. I may be avoiding conversations in the weirdest ways but I can talk for days about the universe, humanity , my passion project…all the stuff that ignites my neurons !
7. I have personal space boundary issues. I do have a physical proximity rule that includes no hugs or coming too close unless I am really comfortable with you. With my kid it’s the exact opposite though…….I cannot get enough of her hugs and cuddles.
8. I am really bad at multitasking. Like really bad. I have to keep telling my husband that I can only do one thing at a time because I need to focus. Each time I have tried otherwise, its been a disaster. This does affect the pace at which I get things done especially with my work since I can do one project at a time but I realized that is how I function best.
9. I cannot eat and speak at the same time. Ugghhhh dinner parties…! This may be something to do with the earlier multitasking point.
10. I connect with animals easier than with humans. I love being around nature and I find that it is very calming and relaxing for me.
11. I love meeting new people. Yes, it may sound surprising and conflicting but I am very curious and I love connecting and getting to know others at a deeper level. It may be why I chose to study Psychology because I find human behavior fascinating.
12. I love being home alone. Even though I love travelling and seeing places but the couch at home calls me. I feel like I do enjoy my own company quite a bit and a quiet peaceful home is just perfect for me .
I love these and all of my quirks that come with being who I am and I don’t mind laughing at my own self sometimes. They are all parts of me with all of the other things that make me ‘me’.
Do you have any quirks of your own that you would like to share?
