Meant to Mentor
There are some people whom we come across in the course of our lives who impact us more than the others. And there are some who change our lives altogether. I am more inclined to call the latter as mentors.
It's probable that during the very first discussion, you would have realized that this person can positively influence your life basis his or her own personal experiences. There are some others too who possess a large breadth of experience but don't have the capability or the inclination to become an effective mentor.
An effective mentor is not a magician, but is something very close to it, provided that we are open for the magic to happen. He or she is not Google who would solve your problems with one click, but is something far better. An effective mentor helps you think, challenges you to stand up for what you believe in and makes you understand what are the areas you should focus on.
No matter which stage of your career you are in, if you have ever come across a mentor, you have been lucky. You might consider paying it forward if you have the inclination to do it.

7yInsightful note on Mr.Sharthok.
NueGo!
7yTrue. But early on we think sponsors add more value than mentors. Sponsors match positions with talent and mentors do what you so nicely wrote about. Indeed a great article.
