Magic of Control + Enter

Magic of Control + Enter

Hello Excel enthusiasts! 🙋

I hope you are having an Awesome day! Welcome back to another edition of the Newsletter📰. I will introduce you to a fantastic and time-saving trick - using "Control + Enter" to fill an entire range in Excel!

🎯The Problem: Repetitive Data Entry

Have you ever found yourself repeatedly typing the same value in a column or row? It could be names, dates, numerical values or repetitive formulas. Doing this can be frustrating, time-consuming and of course, the chance of making errors. 🙆

Not anymore! 😎

💡The Solution: Control + Enter

  1. Select the Range: First, select the range of cells where you want to enter the same value. Now you will notice that the first cell is lighter in colour than the other cells you have selected, called as the active cell.
  2. Enter the Value: Now, type the desired value in the selected cell, as you usually do.
  3. Press Control + Enter: Here comes the magic! 🤩 Instead of only hitting Enter, press and hold the "Control" key and then press the "Enter" key. This action will fill the entire selected range with the value you entered!

📝Example

Let's illustrate this with an example. Imagine you have Employee Name in column B (B2:B11), their Salary is in column C (C2:C11), and you want to assign them Department as Human Resource to first five employees and next five with Accounts Department. (Fig 1.1)

  1. First, select the range A2:A6 (first five employees)
  2. Type: - Human Resource
  3. And Press Control + Enter.

👉 (Follow the same steps for the Accounts department in range (A7:A11))

🤩Voila! All the cells in the selected range (A2:A6) and range (A7:A11) contain the department Human Resource and Accounts, respectively.
