Labor Day reflection: how far we’ve come from then to the modern day

Hello and welcome back to Privy Presents, a newsletter specially curated by the Privy team to discuss digital trust, innovation, and beyond.

May 1st is celebrated as International Labor Day. More than just a day to honor hard work, it’s also a moment to recognize progress, resilience, and innovation. Today's workforce is reaping the rewards of generations of advocacy, now empowered by digital platforms, remote flexibility, and advanced technologies that help people work smarter, faster, and more securely.

From freelancers to frontline workers, technology empowers and complements the strength of human labor in meaningful ways. Let’s take a moment to reflect on how far Labor Day has come, and how technology has supported this movement over the years.

The meaning of Labor Day in the modern world

Labor Day originated from the labor movement’s ongoing struggle for better working conditions, fair wages, and reasonable hours. Tracing back to the 1880s, industrial workers faced challenging conditions, including long hours, unsafe environments, and minimal pay. In response, the labor movement gained momentum to advocate for reforms that would improve workers' lives.

Labor Day was first celebrated on September 5, 1882, in New York City, and later became a federal holiday dedicated to honoring the achievements of workers. However, the Haymarket Affair in Chicago in May 1886 which was marked by violent clashes between workers and law enforcement that prompted the American Federation of Labor to designate this date to commemorate the events.

The movement recognizes workers’ dedication and contributions, while also remembering their struggles and relentless efforts worldwide. Over a century later, we now live in a vastly different era shaped by digital transformation. Workers today navigate complex digital ecosystems, manage hybrid work models, and respond to demands for speed and agility.

While Labor Day has its roots in the industrial struggles of the past, its modern meaning reflects a broader and more dynamic workforce. No longer confined to factory floors or office desks, today’s labor landscape is defined by diversity in roles, environments, and ways of working. Amid the rapid changes of the modern workplace, one thing is clear: technology does not replace labor, it empowers it.

How Privy secures the digital landscape for workers across sectors

In a world where work is increasingly remote, fast-paced, and cloud-based, trust has become a critical currency. Without it, digital tools can feel impersonal or even risky. That’s where digital trust technologies step in. Digital identities and digital signatures aren't just technical features, they enable smoother onboarding, secure remote contracts, and create a trusted foundation for collaboration. In short, they make it possible for people to work confidently across platforms and borders.

At Privy, we build solutions that bridge the trust gap in the digital world. Our platform empowers:

  • Freelancers to secure contracts and get paid faster

  • New hires to complete onboarding from anywhere

  • Professionals to sign documents securely, no printing or mailing required

  • Organizations to streamline workflows with digital signatures, e-Meterai, and electronic seals or stamps

Labor Day reminds us that progress comes from both collective action and innovation. As work evolves, so must the tools that support it.
