The Illusion of Forever: Redefining Success in Product Development
We’ve all heard it: “Build it and they will come.” But what happens when they don’t? Or, more importantly, what happens when the market changes, technology evolves, and your product no longer meets the needs of your customers?
Recently, I had a conversation with a client who’s facing this very dilemma. After eight years of development, they’re ready to sunset their current product and start fresh. While some might label this a “failure,” I see it as a strategic pivot and a testament to their commitment to innovation.
This experience got me thinking about our cultural obsession with “forever.” We often equate success with longevity, permanence, and unwavering progress. But what about the products, projects, and relationships that serve their purpose for a season? Are they any less valuable?
The Value of the Impermanent
A Foundation for Future Success: Even products that eventually fade away can lay the groundwork for something even greater. They might introduce new technologies, cultivate customer relationships, or generate valuable insights that inform future development.

The Courage to Adapt: Acknowledging that a product has reached its end and starting anew requires courage and foresight. It’s a recognition that the market is constantly changing, and successful businesses must adapt to survive.
The Human Element: Behind every product is a team of people who poured their hearts and souls into it. Their efforts, even if the product itself is no longer around, should be celebrated.
Redefining Success
True success isn’t just about the end result. It’s about the journey, the lessons learned, and the impact made along the way. Let’s shift our perspective and appreciate the value of the impermanent. By embracing change and celebrating the successes, both big and small, we can build a more resilient and innovative future.
What are your thoughts on the idea of “forever” in product development? Have you ever had to make the tough decision to sunset a product?
